Name the Actor and the Character

At one point in this film, Alex goes to visit a man who is making over a townhouse. It is obvious that Alex and this man, whom I will call X, have not seen each other for a few years and there is an awkward moment when X answers the door. But X does invite Alex in. In the course of their conversation, Alex asks X about a man named Richard, asking something to the effect if they are still together. X says no, that Richard has been gone about a year now. They have a bit more conversation, during the course of which X offers Alex some money, thinking Alex is out of cash. Alex doesn't accept the money.

I assumed that Alex and X had been lovers in the past during which time Alex had lived in Toronto. I thought the X's involvement with Richard had broken up Alex and X, which is why Alex returned to Sudbury. So, I assumed that Alex was gay.

All of my assumptions were obviously wrong. Can anyone explain the point of this scene between Alex and X, tell me X's character name and the actor who played him.

This is a poor film with a very badly written script that causes much confusion.

I got the impression X was his dad. It was apparent they didn't have much of a relationship. X asked how Alex's mother was, so that was the impression I got. The meeting was to show how estranged he was from his father.

I didn't think Alex was gay, but did they ever explain what happened that night when they were in the school all night? I was thinking something happened between the two, but I don't recall it being explained.
