No rating - but what should it be rated? Content?

I realize that this movie wasn't rated, but what should it be rated, and for what content? The parents advisory page is empty...

Thanks!

It was a serious question.... Please either answer the question realistically, or just ignore the thread.

It'd be kind of a soft R in the U.S. MPAA rating system, I think. There is a scene of a shooting that isn't particularly graphic on the details, but is disturbing because of the face-to-face nature of it and the slow death that would be much more like a real-life shooting than most movie depictions. There isn't much cursing; a few uses of "f#$k," but not heavy. There is one sex scene that shows no nudity and is about what you might see on any given night on TV, with the standard parental warning that everybody ignores. There are also a couple of scenes where children are slapped--nothing particularly violent, and it's posed as not abusive but part of the on-the-spot, DIY punishment that kids get for low-level offenses in that town.

Aside from that, it isn't really the usual nudity/sex/violence/gore/profanity stuff that is at issue; it's more the thematic material and the subversion and replacement of what might be termed a normal code of morality, ethics, and/or law. It's sort of David Lynch does a Western set in Denmark, with echoes of films as all over the map as Wicker Man and Local Hero. If you think about the off-centeredness of the townspeople in Wicker Man and how it's more than slightly unsettling, how the policeman (Edward Woodward) seems to have landed in some other dimension and is trying to figure out the code of the place, that's a little like what you get here.

I would also give it an R rating, just because it isn't really visually disturbing as it has a couple emotionally disturbing parts. Though those parts are great, I def wouldn't see them in a PG-13 movie in the states anyway. (one scene in particular that involves sexuality and a death)

R

No graphic nudity, but there are some clear sexual situations..
