Violence against women and children.

I rented this movie well aware that it would contain thriller aspects and dark humor. Within the first thirty minutes though there was that scene where the town bully repeatedly slaps a kid in the face for shoplifting (to prove a some point to the new sheriff) and immediately I lost interest and excused myself from the movie. As I write this, it is still playing in the other room, and my roommate is still wathcing it. I feel bad for leaving her (and the film itself) so quickly, especially since I was the one who initially pointed it out at the video store. I just have a prejudice against movies that feature violence against women and children. The fact that the scene happens so quickly feels like a warm-up act for similar violence later on. And now I've reading spoilers about the "femme fatale" (who was married to the bully) getting beaten half to death and then hero smothering her with a pillow (or something), which has at least lessened my regret. Basically, what I'm saying is that I would not have rented or recommended this movie based on word-of-mouth if I had known the plot (at least initially) revolved around domestic violence. Ew.

This is pretty concerning to me too, though I haven't opted to see the movie yet. I was hoping to get some content advisory from the parents guide but it is pretty empty.

The thing to remember is that these are actors and no persons were actually injured during the making of this film.

Thank you for not discussing the outside world

Well it's certainly not what expected either. It's a dark movie with a weird title, the main actor is quite evil and I can't say I've watched a movie like this before.. it's a little too real.

...the main actor is quite evil...
Flawed, broken down and manipulated, but I didn't think he was evil.
...it's a little too real.
More surreal I would have thought.

You are bringing your judgements to this film instead of giving the film an unbiased review on the quality of it. You didn't like the subject matter. That doesn't make it a bad film. Violence against women and children happens in society all the time and if movies weren't made about it, it would stay in the closet and not be talked about. I would argue that movies like this actually help to stop violence against women and kids and are incredibly important to be seen and be made. Because it doesn't glamorize it, it does the exact opposite. It sheds a light on how awful it is. And really, honestly how can you give a review on a movie that you didn't even see start to finish?

reply

Completely agree with this. Also, that it "feels too real", as some other poster stated, is a huge quality mark in my opinion.

you're all right watching a movie with violence against men though? Nice to know.

reply

By this same analogy, people should also avoid watching documentaries on the holocaust, wars, and other event in history. It's important to build up a tolerance to seeing these things once in a while. History is studied so that it doesn't get repeated. It is important to be aware and expose yourself to these things.

I suppose if you're watching a movie to be entertained, that's another story, so I dont blame you for leaving the room.

Yet you have no problem with violence against men? Talk about being a hypocrite.

No offense but you sound really foolish and childish with this post. You should delete it. Seriously, think about what you wrote.
