Confusing Plot (SPOILERS)

Well, I sat through this. And I am so confused. I'm wondering if this plot was originally a video game idea, and they just decided to make a movie of it instead.

The movie starts out kind of interesting. The character wakes up in some strange, dark, cave-like level. He doesn't know who he is and neither do we. He comes across dead bodies and weird plant vines. And some strange holographic computer keeps talking about Eden Log and its society.

Everything about the story seems confusing. He comes across an architect whom I think built or designed the level he is on. The architect babbles about setting something loose, I think. I really didn't understand what he was talking about. But later, we find that there are guards from the surface that are looking for the architect.

Eventually, our guy comes across some kind of scientist/botanist. And she performs an experiment on him. He seems to be able to make the roots of the plant come alive. And we find out that the workers on these levels were contaminated by something and they've all turned into mutant monsters.

Our guy starts to travel with the botanist. And he ends up raping her, which was a really surprising plot twist, since all this time, I'm thinking he's some kind of hero. And of course, by raping her, he seems to have contaminated her with whatever is controlling him and the weird vines.

Well, all I really got out of the botanist was that the vines are draining the lifeforce of people. So then she parts ways with our "hero".

He eventually makes it to a security room, where apparently he starts to remember that he is a member of those guards that have been running around the levels beating up on the monsters. He's some kind of sargent or something with security clearance.

So some people commend this guy on whatever he was supposed to be doing down in the levels. And then he's supposed to be doing something with the plant roots.

So, he goes and apparently sacrifices himself to this plant. Only, he doesn't die. He regenerates the plant. But the plant seems to destroy the entire city. And I think we're supposed to believe that somehow the plant now has control over anyone who is left alive. And that's the end of the movie.

I found it really confusing. I loved the levels. I liked how they seemed to have taken all the set designs right out of a video game. I thought they had the atmosphere right. But I kept waiting to understand what was going on, and I never felt I did. I was just super confused throughout the film. I can't say I was bored, although, most of the time, not a whole lot seemed to be happening. I was just confused. If anyone can explain this plot better, please do so cause I feel like I somehow missed the entire point.

I still think the ending was really confusing, though. Did he kill everyone? It looked like the whole city was destroyed. I'm just confused. It is very Soylent Green like. I just wish they would have clarified it all a bit better.

I thought of I am Legend, as well, when I saw this. It kind of felt like a cross between Aliens and The Descent to me. But there's a definite Soylent Green feeling in there. I think it's a cult movie, too. I can see this being remade in a few years, possibly with a bit more action and dialogue.

Uhm.. It was a power plant. He overloaded it, and the city went dark.

No, it looks like the city is destroyed. Look again at the ending shot. It kind of looks like the plant took over the buildings. It could just be the way the scene was shot, but that's what it looks like. First the roots were crawling up the building, then the very ending shot looks like it took over everything.

i got the same thing, that the city was now overrun by the plant and the creatures/immigrants would become the new norm

oh lord, bless this thy hand grenade

I only watched it once, but I thought at the end the tree grew so big that it broke the greenhouse it was in, which killed it (exposed to atmosphere or whatever), then the power to the city went out. I thought the main guy did that on purpose, he knew if he let it feed on him it it'd overgrow and break the greenhouse and die, and wanted that cuz it was unfair to the people working below.

I thought the rape scene was kinda confusing, but I guess it was supposed to be. Like the mutation or whatever was taking over him and he didn't know what he was doing.

I think a little more dialogue could have really helped this movie out. Instead it is mostly shocked, confused looks from the main male character. But I liked the dark lighting, sets, costumes...6/10.
As far as the plot goes I would say it is something about people as energy sources a la the "Matrix."

the rape scene was really confusing!
i had thought that he was so good at it that she had such a good time enjoying the whole session...

later i couldn't understand why she cried so much esp considering she was enjoying it so much

In the rape scene he tought he was making love with her, but in fact he was brutally raping her in his mutated state. Only in the end did he realized that when he saw his image in mirror and stoped.

Correct, this is where he first starts to understand the the noise and shaking he experienced several times wasn't something else coming after him, it was the beast/mutant within. The architect understood it, that's why he told him to kill himself as it would be better than turning into a mutant. Also, you see in a flashback that he kills the architect when he had blacked out/turned into the mutant.
