Any other movies like this ?

I am a big fan of East Asian cinema, and I feel like there are many movies that have resonated with me in a similar way than "Still Walking".

I can think of Chungking Express, Okuribito, Spring summer fall winter... and spring, Last Life in the Universe (which is not East Asian but whatever :P)... mainly contemplative movies with little "happening" but that are still very emotionally charged, and beautiful cinematography. All these (and Still Walking) are definitely in my top 10 movie list.

So, if you have seen those movies, and kind of know what I mean, would you have any movie to suggest that would be similar to the ones above ?
I also like movies with religious themes, because they tend to be very contemplative and slow. I am not necessarily looking for East Asian movies, you can suggest any movie.

HOWEVER, from my experience on imdb, when people ask for "similar movies" people tend to post a long list of "classic" foreign movies to show that they have watched these "great foreign movies". I am sure that you have seen many foreign movies, I have too, and I know what I want to watch, so I do appreciate the effort of you even answering to this post but please post movies only if you really think that they are along the lines of what I have mentioned, and not just any foreign movie that you liked.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it !

You might try Jibeuro aka The Way Home http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312841/

Yes that looks exactly like the kind of movie I was looking for ! Thank you, much appreciated !

Check out Ozu's movies. They're also slow powerful drama's mostly about family relationships. They're old but worth it.

I suggest starting with the 'Noriko Trilogy' (Late Spring / Early Summer / Tokyo Story).

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look really un-evolved? - Bill Hicks

reply

Ahh yes Ozu... I know about him and 'Tokyo Story' is regarded as perhaps THE best Japanese movie there is...

However I haven't built up the courage to watch any of his films yet. I have watched other 'classic' B&W, 3h-long movies that have bored me to death so I have some apprehension about Ozu. I definitely need to though, and I will eventually watch them :)

Thanks for answering, much appreciated !

Have you seen Kore-era's other masterpiece, Nobody Knows? It's spectacular and also on netflix; it was the first film of his I saw so I didn't expect it to be so quiet and such at all but it's excellent. Very bleak, but so so good.

and now my eyes pine ahead

Yes, I saw it but for some reason I much preferred Still Walking. Thank you for your suggestion though !

The movie Ponette was a very powerful film that might be something you would find interesting. I tend to be partial to films that deal with families and their reactions to death/grief so I might be a bit off the focus you are looking for.

Here's a list I made that roughly fits what you're looking for. It's Asian drama.

The Isle
Tokyo Story (You wont be disappointed)

Non-Asian:

Lost in Translation
The Station Agent

That looks like a very good list !

I've watched about half of the movies you listed (and I really liked most of them) so I'll definitely give some of these a shot.

We share similar taste in movies, Still Walking is also one of my all time favourite, so I think you may like Lee Chang-dong's Poetry, The Scent of Green Papaya, among others already mentioned. As for non-asian, I recommend Zerkalo and Stellet Licht.
