You have to wait for your shower to open up at a truck stop, paying first, taking a number, and waiting for your shower. In the immediate scene after she followed him down the hallway we see her in a shower by herself. Therefore my take was he was an obvious opportunity for her to partake in an empty emotionless act, or begin turning her life around. This is her revelation in the film where she realizes how empty her life is, and begins thinking of her son.

I thought the shower scene was trying to show how bad she felt about the "ONS" with the trucker before she turned her life around...But both of your points seem a lot more logical.
No, I think she had more taste than that! Case in point: the first guy she shagged (at the beginning of the film), looked like a male model. The guy in the truck stop looked like a member of ZZ Top/a serial killer. She was hot, she could pull any guy. Even the occasionally promiscuous have standards.
