Blatant rip off

This movie is a blatant rip off of Over The Top. It's insulting!

I disagree with your comment. Please explain in detail why you think Trucker "ripped off" Over the Top. I seen both movies and they are completely different other than how Over the Top was really bad. I believe this movie involves a lot of psychological relationships between each character, whereas OTT is just a horrible action movie. This movie was fantastic. I am a 21 year old male and this movie was perfect.

You mean its not a remake of the 1998 movie Black Dog starring Patrick Swayze and Meat Loaf??!

Pump your brakes boy, Over the Top's a national treasure

How can you disagree. Both movies had a person working as a truck driver fighting for custody of their child

Wow....How could that ever even come close to being a comparison? That's like saying hockey is the same as football because they both score through goals. Over The Top was basically a silly romp where Trucker was based on a series of trials and tribulations that sort of kept coming back full circle. And even though the trucking aspect of the story was basically little more than the background aspect I was impressed at how well they actually did catch a truckers lifestyle compared to basically every other movie about trucking I've seen. I'm a long hauler and have basically laughed at every other movie with a trucking aspect to it because they just seem clueless to pretty much anything regarding trucking....They could become dispatchers or brokers if this making movies doesn't pan out...Apparently there's always room for ignorance in those segments of the industry. But this movie has been closer than most that I've seen....

My favorite major nonsense move was that Patric Swazy movie (Black Dog something) He hops into the cab and begins switching all the toggle switches on the dash to the up position like this was something that needed to be done before getting the truck started....He basically was switching things like the gauge reading from the right to the left tank, the Jake break (That doesn't switch on until it needs to be used) and several other things that are basically utilities used at different times and nothing you switch on to start the truck......And the next extremely nonsense part in the movie was when the DOT guy hops up to inspect the load. He's walking around in the back through isles of pallets like he's in a warehouse or something....If hyou hjave a bunch of pallets not locked in somehow and are sitting there in rows with space between them just what do you think you'll see the first time you stop and open the doors? Not hard to figure, unless you make movies...or are in the business side of trucking....

Not hardly. I also was an over the road trucker for 38 years, and I actually seen people who did things in the movie out on the road. When she was at the trucker lounge watching TV,and made eye contact with the guy there. She leaves, and he followers her. They don't follow up on what happened, but you could tell whatthey both wanted. and when arrived at one of the deliveries, and the dispatch told her that there was no load for her,and she needed one. I loved the story, and the trucking was just the back ground to the relationships between everyone around , and her truck driving decision.

Really? I missed the arm wrestling scenes in Trucker. Please point them out to me. Not to mention the sex scene in Over the Top. Oh, and where Stallone is almost raped.

Oh come on, the premise of each movie is identical. Divorced trucker asked to take care of estranged son by dying Ex. Trucker and child bond on the road and through sports (baseball in one case, arm wrestling in the other).

I'm not saying Trucker ripped off Over the Top but they are certainly more similar to each other than football and hockey.

I agree while it is not a blatant rip off. It is the same premise, they should of change alot more.

Same premise, yes. But different story, involving different people. Different interpersonal dynamics between characters. Several similarities definitely, in basic premise, but the list of differences are numerous as well.

Perhaps instead of a ripoff it's a remake of sorts, with an entirely new look, feel, story and mood attached to it? Look, there are plenty of "damsel in danger walks into a PI's office and asks for help" type films out there as well, are they all ripoffs of the ones that came before them too? No? Didn't think so.

no one said it was an exact copy, we said a blatant rip off, which even according to you statements, you actually agree.

reply

Nor did I say anything about it being an exact copy. In fact I believe I clearly pointed out that there were several key differences. So no, I don't fully agree that it's a 'blatant ripoff'. That was the main point of my post.

reply

3 years later I still call it a rip off!

reply

Blatant ripoffs, aren't exact copies, it's when the rip-off most of the story and make just enough changes that they can release without paying royalties.

Nothing at all like "Over the Top". No "over the top" testosterone-laden scenes with a father/estranged male child relationship underlying issue.

This movie has REAL relationship issues dealt with in a very real way--not just a movie built around unrealistic scenes about the trucking industry.

I liked "Over the Top" because of Stallone but this was a much better portrayal of a parent/estranged child scenario set against a very realistic portrayal of long haul truckers. I love truckers because of their independent nature and sometimes quirky personalities. This movie portrayed a much more believable view of this lifestyle and the people who live it.
