Why are tomboys allowed to get away with crossing gender lines but...

Heaven forbid a boy can't act feminine without being labeled "gay"? It really pisses me off and baffles me at the same time.

She did say people at her school thought she was a lesbian. It's also not true, girls are conditioned to act girly, aspire to be princesses, name pink their favourite colour, just like boys are with sports, roughness, etc, and if they don't act a certain way they could have trouble adjusting with a group of friends, etc.

Both tomboys and feminine boys get crap. Society rejects what is prevalent, yet perspectively uncommon.

I've seen plenty of tomboy girls have no problem attracting guys. Girls, even if they are fat or "ugly" still can easily find a mate with a fraction of the social initiative males are expected to have and find a mate. If you act feminine as a male and are straight, you pretty much have no chance, because apparently in women's eyes being feminine means being inadequate, especially when involving protecting women who don't want to empower themselves by looking out for their own ass. Women want men to be in touch with their feminine side, until it comes time to pick a mate of course. "I hate gender roles....except when I'm looking for a man to date. He must be at cute, at least 6' tall, must have a car a job and first and foremost be confident when I don't have to be."

The boy she had a crush on was pretty feminine and no one made fun of him.

reply

Except for the main character...also he wasn't feminine.

reply

He was super-feminine, I thought thats why they picked him, shes a butch girl, hes a girly guy...

reply

They pretty much just made him like the quiet outcast guy who isn't exactly tom brady. His femininity wasn't nearly as strong as the girls masculinity and the girls masculinity was actually relevant to the story and jokes. He wasn't "super feminine" just because he wasn't type casted as a typical macho guy most women want us to be well aware they are attracted to. All his character did was listen to his headphones. If they were trying to make it clear that he was super feminine, they failed. Where were all the limp wristed semi offensive homosexual cliche's? this is a hollywood comedy after all. His character didn't do a single thing that made him seem overly feminine and there wasn't a single joke directed at that either, unlike the many jokes directed at bella thorne. maybe I'm wrong and stepped away from the screen when it happened or something...

reply

Maybe its a historical thing as tomboys have been around in literature and popular culture for a long time.

Its that man again!!

Were we watching the same movie? lol I'm pretty sure Bella's character getting a makeover to become more confident and to attract the boy she likes- wasn't exactly what i would call "pro-tomboy"... but if you are talking about society as a whole- lots of guys that aren't blokey and gym obsessed attract girls (look at singers, actors) - this seems like a personal issue for you not a comment about the movie so I'm not going to attack you but just like guys like different girls, girls like different types of boys so wouldn't lump all girls into a category of what attracts them.. guess it just depends on what you define as feminine as well Jake (Bella's love interest) to me seemed pretty sweet and he wasn't muscular (I didn't like Adam calling him skeletor in the movie think that was a bit much and personal- even though he made fun of his own weight) but I still thought he was cute
