UK PURCHASE

Okay, after Manhunt 2 being allowed release in UK I have left my pre-order with play.com but the date says 1st Feb 08. However, my mate who lives in Leicester found it in an independent store!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she says she couldn't believe it but does anyone know how why it is in stores and not online as yet?!? is it because of the ID thing ie when u buy it from a store you have to have ID present but online this isnt the case.

Many Thanks

Lydia

Hey there,

Yes, Rockstar did win its appeal on the ban in the UK to get it overturned. But, however, the BBFC was not happy with the Video Appeals Committee's decision on overturning their ban. Apparently, the BBFC said that the Video Appeals Committee "had been guilty of a very serious misinterpretation of the law" and has now decided to take the matter to the high court for a review. The release dates you see on websites such as play were put up after Rockstar won the original appeal.

No-one was expecting the BBFC to take further action over a computer game, but, it seems the censors are not going to let Manhunt 2 be released if they can help it. The court case is due to be heard sometime later this month. So, even if Rockstar does win their case in the high court, I would be highly doubtful it will be released by the first of next month. The judge deciding over the case also granted the BBFC a stay on the game's 'banned' status.

I hope this helps your question.

EDIT: As for your friend finding it in the store, it either was a 'dodgey' copy or the US version, either way the store selling the game would be in breach of the law. However, importing Manhunt 2 is NOT against the law. Only buying it within the UK would be.

I have imported my own copy, however I had to also buy an American PS2 to get playing it.

oh ok thank you very much for your reply! :)

And there was me getting all excited that Manhunt 2 was gonna get released! boo hoo i hate the BBFC now. How can they allow video nasties to be on the shelves now and not let a video game that is no way as bad as watching those disgusting films not get released and played/bought by adults?! grrr

I agree, the BBFC have double standards for games and DVDS. I have played this game, and I am currently on level 13: Altered state. I have yet to come across anything in this game that is more violent than most of the '18' rated horror movies out today, Including 'Hostel,' Saw,' 'Hostel 2,' and not including most of the Video Nasties which now have been passed uncut.

But it's not even that, the BBFC have no argument in banning Manhunt 2, whilst I agree the game is certainly not for children but it is no argument to have the game banned. That same argument could go for all '18' rated entertainment out there! Children could still get hold of them. That was one of the BBFC's reasons for rejecting it. Another was the game's "unrelenting focus on brutal slaying.." err why was Manhunt itself even allowed out then?

These are questions the BBFC can't and won't answer properly. And the Video Appeals Committee was right in overturning the ban. NOW ALL IS LEFT IS FOR THE HIGH COURT TO SEE COMMON SENSE!
