crap modern, middle class parenting!

Let the kids rule the house. Let them do what they want, say what they want, e.g. trash the house.
Don't enforce any boundaries. Parents should be whiny and pathetic. Don't tell them off (at least effectively), let them think the world revolves around them , no matter how rude, obnoxious and annoying they are.
Wonder why they are so badly beahved and disruptive in school.

Still, one up from the pond life parenting on Eastenders, where children's aspirations are no higher than getting pregnant at the first opportunity, working within 40 yards in some menial job before drinking away all their non-existent wages.

Brilliant rolemodels.

I agree, in real life they would be awful parents.

Doesn't make the show any less funny though, in fact, it makes it funnier because the kids essentially rule the house.

It's unfair to class all middle class parents together like that. Mine were nothing like Hugh and Claire's characters.

I'm anespeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericumbobulations...

their good - in that they seem to have endless patience, rarely shout and you never hear them swear at the children like i hear parents do all the time in the street. plus they have not put ben on medication like most parents would have.

wow...you must have no friends if you speak to everyone like that. I've seen far worse in terms of spelling and grammar on imdb boards and the common mistake of your and you're isn't something to get narky over. Chill out, it's no wonder no one wanted to continue the discussion with you.

Ok, so legitimate question here, seems many really love the show I've watched just 2 episodes so far and I don't get it. It's not that I hate it, just not finding the humour and I'm wondering if its required to have kids to make it more funny to me.

It could be an English thing, but I just highly doubt that, I love many British comedies. Anyway, if anyone can grant me some insight on what they find funny about this show I would be grateful.

I don't think you have to have kids to appreciate it, but it helps if you enjoy observing the way kids interact with the adults and the way they make sense of the world around them. This show is very character driven. If you don't like or relate to the characters then it's hard to enjoy and//or understand.

An example of what I find funny: Ben when he had a double espresso he said he felt 'all zingy zangy zongy'. Very funny in itself. Even funnier as it followed Pete looking aghast when he learnt from Jake that he and Ben had just enjoyed a coffee. Pete asks, with trepidation, where Ben is. Jake doesn't have to answer as Ben pipes up with his 'zingy zangy zongy' comment. Ben's reply is endearing whilst confirming Pete's worst fear - that his already hyperactive son has a caffeine rush.

I'm an American with no kids and love it. I think to appreciate it you have to take into account its creativity in how they present the story and how well drawn up the characters are. I love how consistent they all are. The humor isn't like a lot of American shows where you get a bunch of one liners its more sitcom-ish and you haev to have patience to enjoy it. The kids are cute and if you like kids Karen is the best!

The first episode my wife and I, now in her late 50s who raised four children, was kind of tiring with so much going on. But we kept watching and around the third episode or so it really started to get funny to us. With each episode after that it just kept getting better and better until we just grew to love the show so much and have shared it with many of our friends here in America who also love it.

The Brockmans aren't middle class, they are a teacher and a PA/secretary and one or the other are usually unemployed. They are working class, the only reason you think they are middle class is because both of them work - I suppose your idea of the working class is people on the dole?

Opinions are just onions with pi in them.

They are middle class.

I couldn't agree more on what you said on both series. The truth is that Sue and Pete are cowards who can't stand up to there own childern.
The same for eastenders where most women are domineering bullys.

It's a sad potrayal of english life.

reply

I agree. They are very wishy-washy parents who have NO boundaries. They fail to question any of their offspring's actions and however badly behaved any of them are never implement any repurcussions or even simply shout at them.

If you can overlook that, it's still hilarious stuff.

I liked the way the girl stood up to her nasty headmistress.
