The problem I have with this is not a matter of pronoun choice but of grammar.
When Lundy-Paine was two years old, the family moved to Alameda, California. In 2012, they graduated from Encinal High School, and in 2015, from New York University.
That indicates that the entire family "graduated from Encinal High School, and in 2015, from New York University". The subject of the first quoted sentence is 'the family' and not 'Lundy-Paine' and 'they' can be a plural pronoun so it would naturally apply to 'the family'.
