Unintentionally hilarious

This movie is like a Cohen Brothers or Tarantino crime thriller movie where everything goes wrong, but without any of the intentional black comedy moments. The result is that ironically, by taking itself so seriously, it is actually more ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but at the end where Ray tries to disarm the arson and ends up inadvertently shooting Carla right in the middle of the forehead, I burst out laughing. If that scene was viewed in isolation I would certainly not have reacted that way, but taken together with everything that preceded it, the reaction is "of course that happened." It was already absurd when his friend died in the car accident and to top it off they revealed a baby to be in the car and the dog was randomly killed by a shark. The guy getting impaled on the spike and the old lady getting burnt were pretty much just under the threshold for when it started to get comical and then it kept coming.

It also didn't help that every single character in the movie is despicable not in a realistic "everyone is a different shade of grey" sort of way, but with everyone being a corrupt scumbag if not an outright active criminal. I consider myself pretty cynical and still didn't feel that this movie depicted a world close enough to our own for me to feel sympathetic or invested in anyone.

I don't see your reasons for arguing that the incidents you mention are ridiculous/hilarious are valid. We see the results of two people getting involved in an escalating series of shady events, they should never have contemplated with almost predictably tragic results. If you want to call that "comical", when the film is anything but, that's your opinion. But I note your supporters are rather thin on the ground.🐭

I wouldn't say the incidents were hilarious or ridiculous, but they were definitely over the top. How many worst case scenario, freak accidents can happen involving one person? The guy accidentally killed an old lady, his mistress, the weird guy with the mullet and his friend within a short period of time. Yes he was going down a shady path, but you're telling me unintentionally killing that many people doesn't seem like a bit much?

You need to re-read my post and then watch the film again, because you have your "facts" wrong. You just appear to be pinning everything on Ray.🐭

Pretty sure it WAS intentional :)
