Unintentionally hilarious
This movie is like a Cohen Brothers or Tarantino crime thriller movie where everything goes wrong, but without any of the intentional black comedy moments. The result is that ironically, by taking itself so seriously, it is actually more ridiculous.
I'm sorry, but at the end where Ray tries to disarm the arson and ends up inadvertently shooting Carla right in the middle of the forehead, I burst out laughing. If that scene was viewed in isolation I would certainly not have reacted that way, but taken together with everything that preceded it, the reaction is "of course that happened." It was already absurd when his friend died in the car accident and to top it off they revealed a baby to be in the car and the dog was randomly killed by a shark. The guy getting impaled on the spike and the old lady getting burnt were pretty much just under the threshold for when it started to get comical and then it kept coming.
It also didn't help that every single character in the movie is despicable not in a realistic "everyone is a different shade of grey" sort of way, but with everyone being a corrupt scumbag if not an outright active criminal. I consider myself pretty cynical and still didn't feel that this movie depicted a world close enough to our own for me to feel sympathetic or invested in anyone.
