The Dogs
I remember reading a review where they said the dogs played an important part in the movie, I didn't pick up on that. Someone care to enlighten me?

The Dogs are pretty much a metaphor or a mirror to what's happening on the movie. The female dog keeps risking herself across shark waters to see the male dog till one day the sharks get her and she gets killed, just like the main characters, they keep risking their lives and eventually the female gets killed.
Cool thanks. I hate metaphors.
sharehahaha why?

I had no idea that the dog was killed by a shark. I thought the dog succumbed to exertion and drowned. Was that a river or part of the sea? I thought it was a lake...
sharesomewhere in the movie is this short dialogue, i think between Raymond and Smithy after Raymond brings the dog back, where they are talking about it. I think Smithy asked Raymond if it's true that there are sharks in the water.

Why would the dog succumb to exertion when it's already swam the same waterways several times to Ray's house???? It wasn't even that far. Didn't you see the water turn blood red after the dog went down?????
That's not a lake. It's a cove.
There's dialogue in the movie that refers to the river being infested with sharks. And when the dog "drowns" theres a big cloud of blood. So even though you literally don't see the dog being chewed by a shark, it's strongly inferred.
shareWhat about similes?
What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

Oh that's what happened to the dog. I was puzzeled by that. Thanks, linesa51!
But one question: wasn't the big dog who was eaten by the shark the male? I thought the little white dog was the female.
Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, and / or doesn't.
It was left out, but returning the dog may have been the first introduction between Ray & Carla. Besides the usual metaphorical use.

It took me a while to realize the big dog was the female, which made more sense metaphorically.
