Rock Haven is a failure.

In this story of sexual identity conflicting with religious beliefs there could have been a profound message, but instead the film fails on every possible level. What should have been moving and insightful was instead shallow and uninspired, the script never rises above the bottom levels of mediocrity and the directing is passable at best. The performers really do try their best to make something out of the weak script, but with such superficial material it’s difficult to force sincerity or depth. The performances come across unprofessionally with dubious character choices but really it is the writing/directing that is insipid and one-dimensional. I was very, very disappointed with this movie especially after reading such glowing reviews of it, but the reality of this film is completely different then what the praises promise. The director doesn’t know how to work with actors, that is obvious, but he also doesn’t know how to let the scenes evolve into something more then just the very basic recitation of lines which never allows the emergence of genuine sentiment and emotion. Trite, boring and monotonous… this one may pander to those who are easily impressed or those who’ve been searching for a religious gay flick but to those who won’t be awed with dogmatic Christian pretense (which is sadly never developed) won’t be impressed with this movie. I have seen people compare this with the incredible film “Latter Days” but such a comparison is almost offensive. If you want a religious gay film that’s done right, see “Latter Days” and don’t waste your time with this one.

For seriously. The pastor was the absolute best (worst).

When the pastor spoke a purse fell out of his mouth. This film was like a gay-themed afterschool special from hell. But with gratuitous d**k shots.

I don't think we should be knocking the "gratuitous d**k shots," since without them, the film would have been an absolute failure. With them, it's just terrible, but with a few shots worthy of viewing.

i think you're wrong.

why are you so angry with this flim?

disagree :)
i watched latter days too, but find rock haven much better.

yes, it's low cost production, has a raw script and few supporting actors were not good.
it is rare now days to see a gay drama move that is not set up in modern cool gym hyper sexual environment, so this was refreshing, cute, innocent and inspiring.
i also prefer when a movie is not overproduced regarding camera/sound. i prefer raw talent even if it is not much developed, over producing skills.

just my biased 5 cents on it ;)

Absolutely on-the-money -- not the movie but this and other negative reviews of it. The "Christian" hero really earns no respect at all because he's let himself become a mechanical parrot, mouthing dogma ("what we did was wrong" after a blissful sexual experience) and refusing to question any belief ever drummed into his pretty little head by a monstrous moron-Mama. Characters have to develop in a movie, they have to grow & evolve, especially if their starting point is blank-faced, ignorant imbecility. But this stupid kid just stares at rocks & waves, waves & rocks, with long tortured silences where enlightening dialogue ought to be. You could put two other movies in the wide open spaces where dialogue is absent and slack-jawed silence fills (pads) the running time. People as stupid as the hero are very hard to care about. He doesn't DESERVE a fulfilling sexual romantic experience because he's too dumb to appreciate it. He's a sullen pouting lump, tho the actor who plays the part is at least attractive and, quite incidentally, has perfectly lovely nipples -- budding blossoms of joy in a dreary droop of a film.
