A Confusing Film- Hathaway character is RUDE

Helen and me, both 60 year-old gals, knit and watch movies together while on pain medication. We decided to rent a movie with The Princess Diaries star in it. Boy what a mistake!

Anne Hathaway plays Rachel, a former addict. What she was addicted to, we have no clue. She goes home to a huge mansion and greets her sister, who is preparing for her wedding. Then she suddenly bolts "for a meeting" the same day as the rehearsal dinner? Helen and me popped another pill and started buzzing and getting more drowsy, thus the confusion was worse.

Later that day she bumps into a guy she met at her meeting. He's at her house for the rehearsal dinner too. They have sex. For what purpose? Who is this random dude?

Anne Hathaway keeps bumping into an older black woman who's always by her father's side. Is she a therapist? Again, terrible writing.

The big question mark is what the point of the story is? Hathaway is not likable. She's pretty rude to everyone she bumps into. She's a loser compared to the rest of her family. How they can afford such a big house is never explained. Debra Winger shows up late in the film only to get into a fist fight with Hathaway, and put her down a lot. No one seems to like Rachel very much. She's a Debby Downer, as Helen claimed.

FINAL GRADE: D for Depressing

I don’t really know if this post is a joke or not, but I’ll reply to it as if it’s not.

She’s a drug addict, probably was addicted to opiates. Her family is rich; doesn’t really matter why or how. That’s why she’s able to live in a rehab facility for so long, and also how she’s been enabled by and manipulated her dad so much over the years and how she’s been in rehab so many times. The black woman with her dad is his current wife. Debra Winger plays her mom, his ex wife. Everyone hates her because she makes it hard to love her. She’s deceived everyone in her family countless times and has endlessly disappointed them. Her desire to finally be taken seriously is a little too little, too late for them, but it does seem like they’re trying. They also hate her because she caused the death of her younger brother, and that’s not something that ever goes away. I didn’t think it was depressing at all, and even if it was, I don’t see why a movie has to be all sunshine and rainbows to be interesting or good. I thought it was a pretty raw and entertaining take on a woman in her late 20s and her family members dealing with the effects of her addiction and trying to rebuild their lives. I like that it’s tangential and meandering. It’s like watching real life unfold. The documentary style direction really works in this film.
