Other movies like Rachel Getting Married?

Hi,
Firstly, I love this movie. So raw and emotional and realistic. Anyway, can anyone recommend any other movies with a similar theme, or feeling to it?
Thanks

The move "Georgia" with Jennifer Jason Leigh is great and it has almost identical themes only a better movie I think. Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance is so good and heartbreaking the Meryl Streep was angry she wasn't nominated for an Oscar, and Meryl was that year! Also the movie "Rush" with Jennifer Jason Leigh is another great one.

Please if you watch Georgia and or Rush come back and let me know what you think. The movie "Half Nelson" is also very raw and real! Let me know!

somehow no one has mentioned the film rachel getting married is a blatant rip off of, if not a remake. the superior 'festen'. this is the film most similar to rachel getting married as demme basically stole everything from festen, see for yourself.

True, it's clearly inspired by "Festen"(1998).

Jonathan Demme acknowledged the influence of Dogme95 on this film in an interview.

I wouldn't call it a rip-off since the story's different, but it has some similarities in plot development

and especially in the style: To shoot it just like 'a wedding video' was the groundbreaking idea in "Festen"(1998).

But that was 10 years earlier.

This movie is overrated and not as good as "Festen".

28 Days (2000) with Sandra Bullock as the alcoholic sister who ruins her sister's wedding by being drunk (altho the worst part is shown in flashback and most of the movie is her struggle at rehab).

"Margot at the Wedding" is pretty close. Here the sister is an obnoxious, self-centered heavy drinker who creates chaos wherever she goes...and not in a funny (ha,ha) way. Some scenes are pretty grim and may make you cringe. The acting is superb. Hope this helps.

Anything by Lars von Trier (and pretty much any Danish or Swedish film maker) where the plot centers on a family. Especially if there is a large gathering of some kind.

Not sure if I'd say it's similar, but it reminded me of 'Dan in Real Life' for the potrayel of the family and exploring sibling relationships (brothers, instead of sisters this time).

'The Family Stone' again just for the family/sister vibe, although that one is even more different in tone.

Neither are as raw or emotionally realistic as 'Rachel...' but I think the themes are there.

Here are some of the films I consider to be "raw and emotional and realistic". Some of the plot synopses make their respective film sound more cliched or plot-heavy than it actually is. In reality, I think they all share Rachel Getting Married's willingness to let the little character moments breathe. Anyway, I've given each a star rating out of 5.

The Sweet Hereafter (1997) - A small mountain community in Canada is devastated when a school bus accident leaves more than a dozen of its children dead. ****

Yi Yi (2000) - Each member of a family in Taipei asks hard questions about life's meaning as they live through everyday quandaries. *****

Fish Tank (2009) - Everything changes for 15-year-old Mia when her mum brings home a new boyfriend. *****

Young Adult (2011) - Soon after her divorce, a fiction writer returns to her home in small-town Minnesota, looking to rekindle a romance with her ex-boyfriend, who is now happily married and has a newborn daughter. ***

Take This Waltz (2011) - A happily married woman falls for the artist who lives across the street. ****

Short Term 12 (2013) - A 20-something supervising staff member of a residential treatment facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend. ****

Krisha (2015) family drama about an alcoholic drug addicted woman who deserted her family, only to pop up years later at a Thanksgiving family get together causing all sorts of drama, hostility, and chaos. Very sad and depressing, especially when she drunkenly pleas for her son to let her back in his life.
