Kind of strange movie

I remember when this premiered and I watched it, but when I viewed it again this Christmas, I noticed some different things.

In the beginning, they made it seem like Nick was unhappy with Sheila. They seemed to imply she was a bit materialistic and loved him for what he had. Two things that come to mind are "honey, I need the Amex" and her not being thrilled at Paula attending the gallery opening. And then of course, her friends talking about Paula when she arrived. Then, their other former classmate who I guess dated Gary (the redhead) was practically flirting with him and clearly coveting what wasn't hers. Then you also have Nick and Paula's conversation at the gallery.

So then we get to the "dream," and Sheila is now the opposite of what her personality is in "real" life? Sheila, as the other woman, is now less materialistic and makes Nick happy. Gary has married the woman openly hitting on him in front of his wife? And somehow has the exact same children...? Although Gary seemed to have the same personality in life and in the dream.

It seems like they tried to create an alternate scenario, but it didn't quite work.

I came here to see if anyone saw this. It's exactly how I feel. The story all of the sudden just turned and I'm left confused as to the terms of the alternate universe.

I think that what was implied in both worlds is that Paula and Nick weren't meant to be. His girlfriend Sheila made him happy in both worlds.
