book v movie **possible spoilers...

In the book its petrova who wants to fly planes and posy whose mom was a ballerina-- i'm just wondering why they swapped the roles?

reply

They didn't!

But, regarding your subject, book is better becuase this one missed out alot of scenes which were good.

I don't remember Garnie being ill all the time in the book, or did I just miss that when I read it?

I saw a reference somewhere to Emila Fox playing "the consumptive" guardian - did she have TB in the book?

reply

No, your memory is correct. That was a bit of dramatic tension injected into the 2007 film, to provide more of an emotional tug for the girls, especially Petrova, to keep working. Noel Streatfeild's Sylvia is quite healthy, if a little thin and anxious, and quite competent in her own right - unlike the ditzy Silvia of the earlier miniseries!

but that is the roles of the girls in the screen version..

but i would like to know which things was changed or cut out

Winifred (Pauline's understudy in Alice in Wonderland) is much more sympathetic in the book--she isn't nasty when Pauline is cast over her, just sad.

Also, in the book there is no romance between Syliva/Garnie and Mr. Simpson, who is actually married.

There are a few additional episodes in the book, like Pauline and Petrova appearing together as brother and sister in Maeterlinck's Blue Bird and Petrova coming down with the flu. Also Pauline has even lighter, "almost white," blonde hair, and Petrova is described as "too pale and too thin."

And in the book Winifred only replaces Pauline as Alice for one night after Pauline misbehaves. In the film it implies that Winifred is replacing her for the rest of the performances.

I'm gonna die of long hair!
