the only reason was Emma Watson

90% of the people who saw Ballet Shoes saw it because Emma Watson was in it. I know I did. The movie was broadcasted once on BBC here in India, but I had my exams going on at that time, and I was bitterly dissapointed I couldn't catch it. So I downloaded the movie using BitTorrent. All this was because Harry Potter is my favourite thing in the world, and Watson is the love of my life. But once I saw the movie, it was pretty good, and very English. Watson acted really well.

So who else saw the movie because Watson was in it... own up!

reply

Oh yeah, she was a total magnet used by the BBC to gain audiences. I think that's also why they made her more of a lead character than Posey. I mean, it's not like she's got any really great talents to speak of, so why else would they cast her? It's all about roping in the viewers.

"Joey ate my last stick of gum, so I killed him...do you think that was wrong?"

reply

You are incorrect. Pauline is a lead role--she is at least as big as Posy in the book, if not bigger. A great deal of the book is told from either her or Petrova's point of view--in fact, very little is told from Posy's POV. Emma Watson did a fine job and, judging from her performance in Ballet Shoes, has plenty of talent.

cd_boy, where is "here"? I might be able to help. If it's the UK, it's already on DVD in Woolies, HMV, etc. Other than that, the whole thing is actually on youtube right now.

Why don't you just download it from rapidshare or watch it from youtube? If you want the DVD that badly have it shipped via Amazon. Will just cost you 5 or 6 extra dollars.

reply

Do you have the rapidshare addy? It must be a ways back, as I couldn't find a link all the way back to mid February.

Are you serious? You don't know that the U.S. is part of the continent North America?

reply

I literally almost spit of the screen when I read his/her comment. hahahaha. I'm hoping they're young and haven't taken Geography yet; but at any rate you should still know what Continent you're on/belong to

reply

i did and i liked it, but emma was a brat adn i dont like the way just was meant to play, it just was weird adn she was stupid acting in it.

reply

Come on!!! Even I found Emma a brat, and irritating a bit, especially about that dress she kept leaving on stage and refusing to get. But that just proves her acting skills. Have you read the book. This side of character is very subtly put there, and she brought it to life. But I'll say even Petrova (Yasmin Paige) also acted extremely well.

reply

i know i did !

reply

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Emma Watson is pretty much made of wood. She butchered the role of Pauline fabulously. However, I was surprised to find that I didn't have many other issues with the show.

I though Petrova was a little too old and well formed (she's supposed to be sallow and skinny) and I thought it was a little harsh to make Theo a bit of a tart. However, some of the major changes they made were inspired. I can't believe I never thought of the doctors as a couple before! Also the romance for Sylvia was just adorable. So sweet!

But Jarjar makes the Ewoks look like *beep* Shaft!

reply

No offence, but IMO Emma was absolute *beep* in this. I mean really, really awful. Even worse than she is in HP, which is really saying something (I thought she was good in movies 1, 2 and 3, but was bloody awful in movies 4 and 5). The other two girls showed her up so badly. She cannot act, seriously. She should stick to modelling, because she just cannot act for *beep*

I mean, I went to the Globe theatre today to see A Midsummer Night's Dream, and when the person playing Puck recited 'I am that merry wanderer of the night' they really brought it to life, you know? When Emma recited it, she just sounded like she was reading a piece of pretty poetry. Not acting. Not playing anything other than herself, as bloody usual.

And her emoting... Jesus. That scene by the dinner table when she starts to 'cry' just made me laugh.

Yes, I'm being a bitch, and I'm sorry about it, but she needs to learn to act and tame those bloody eyebrows. She's ruined Hermione, Pauline, and now apparently she's going to ruin some woman called Betsy who fell in love with Naepoleon, and it. Has. Got. To. Stop. She's got to get some coaching or some serious training if she actually wants to act as a career for the rest of her life.

I'm going to run away from the inevitable cries of 'Troll' now.

reply

Nicely worded, obsessmuch. It's true, she is a horrible actress and now because of the success of Harry Potter she is offered roles that she does not deserve and wins awards purely based on popularity.

There are plenty of young talented actresses with proper training who would be fantastic in these parts and Ballet Shoes proves it. The other young actresses in that movie outacted her in leaps and bounds.

reply

I would not go so far as to say that she is a horrible actress, but I never thought she was right for the role of Hermione, or at least not after the first two movies. As soon as her hair got un-bushy and she started wearing tight jeans, I was like, "You'g got to be kidding me!". I might be missing something, but I can't think of one place in the whole HP series, minues the Yule Ball, where Hermione is referred to as attractive.

I haven't seen Ballet Shoes, but I want to just to see what Emma looks like playing someone different. I don't think it's very fair to judge her by her performance in HP, since she just wasn't the one for the role. She might be rubbish in Ballet Shoes, but that was one of my favorite books growing up, second to Secret Garden and A Little Princess, so I think it's worth a try.

reply

If you want to watch it, someone called "meggy" something has the whole thing on youtube. Just type in "Ballet Shoes", and you'll find it.

I can't stand Watson in the Harry Potter films, but I thought that if she wasn't busy ruining Hermione for me then I could actually enjoy Ballet Shoes. As soon as it got to the part in the trailer where she recites those lines, however, I couldn't help but wince. Why why why why why does she do that thing with her eyebrows? Why? You're right, acting classes are in order.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

No doubt I bought this DVD because of Emma Watson! Emma is a super actress. Anytime someone posts a comment here about how "bad" she is at acting, I just laugh because people that say things like that are unaware of how things operate in the movie industry. Emma performs as instructed by the director. If there is any so-called bad acting, it is only "bad" because she was instructed to perform it in that manner by the director. Therefore, the director bears the full blame, not Emma!

She is a great actress and I will see EVERY movie she ever stars in, including the upcoming animated movie, The Tale of Despereaux, which she voices the character of Princess Pea, and the movie, Napoleon and Betsy, in which Emma has been cast as Betsy Balcombe.

You can clearly see that Emma is NOT being cast for her looks alone...her acting skills have earned her voice-over roles in animated movies. Since we won't see Emma in The Tale of Despereaux (her character will be animated and we will only hear her voicing the character) that is proof that she is not being cast for her outstanding beauty alone! She is being cast for her talent.

There is nothing at all to read here, but thank you very much for the click.

reply

I also saw it because of Emma, since I'm a huge fan of her. I think Emma did very well, but I didn't like the film. I thought it was depressing and boring..

reply

well obviously the only reason the people who dont get the bbc channel knows about this movie is because Emma's in it, thats how i knew about it and i was curious enough to watch it because i thought maybe she might do a better job of acting if she had a new character but i was wrong. i really dont like her she seems stuck up, spolied and vain. and shes a terrible actress she ruined hermione and yet she presents her self with such a strong undeserved pride.

reply

[deleted]

yeah but hermione isnt smart-ass! obviously im talking about her real personality, how she acts in interviews, award shows and press confrences.

reply

[deleted]

Not me, i wasn't to bothered that emma watson was in it to be honest. I actually watched it because Yasmin Paige was in it, a brilliant young actress who completly stood out in this drama
