Keanu seemed pretty checked out. Agree?

Granted, I know he's up there in age and he won't be as spry as his '99 self but his performance seemed lethargic to put it mildly. Maybe the poor action choreography is to blame here as most of the fight scenes seemed like boy band dance routines but if I were to hold some sort of standard, Keanu looks nowhere as he is in the John Wick series, which were filmed recently in relation to this movie.

Keanu has always been a bad actor. I have no idea why people thought he was so great in John Wick. He was the weakest thing about that movie.

reply

You’re missing the point, it doesn’t matter whether someone is a good or bad actor, just look at Van Damme and Stallone. What matters is whether the story you’re trying to tell goes with the lead actor you’re trying to tell it with.

Only Stallone could have played Rocky Balboa, a much better actor like Robert De Niro wouldn’t work.

Only Keanu Reeves could play Neo, the overly confused face that Keanu was born with just worked naturally with the story that was being told. Again, he didn’t get the role because he’s some Marlon Brando type.

So you see....in the end....it all comes back to storytelling. Don’t look for the best actor in the room, look for the actor who works best with the story
You are trying to tell.

His overall performance was sub-par from what we've recently seen in Wick. That's the best way I can say it. Are any of the Wick movies Oscar worthy...? Of course not but he made it work for them to be entertaining. In this he refused to move a muscle to the point where they overused his telepathy to compensate for the lack of hand-to-hand combat.

reply

The lack of hand-to-hand combat is because of COVID restrictions (they were really severe in 2020) when they were filming it. Keanu was proven capable to do some light fighting choreography, just like you said, in John Wick. They could also use a stuntman and then face-replace with CGI if they want. It's not like people will complain about too much CGI in a Matrix movie.

The fact that the movie lacks hand-to-hand combat was because of production issues, not Keanu's fault. The director were just a lazy fuck and the producers had lost faith when they saw the half-made turd and just simply release it anyway too recoup some loses so they needed to finish the shoot asap without much budget = magic palms power. Easy and cheap.

He looked tired and bored. It was depressing to see how old he looked in the "real world" version with the buzz cut and it didn't help that he was mostly confused throughout the whole movie when he wasn't moping for Trinity.

For a Matrix series entry, this movie sucked. I hate the modern, androgynous look most of the women sported with that ridiculous fade, made worse with the blue dye in the case of Bugs, who had no charisma and looked terrible in the fight scenes, not to mention the mandatory "don't try to define me using a binary frame of logic" sanctimonious speech that was shoehorned in (eye roll). There was no sequence or fight scene that was memorable, most of the characters were annoying or unlikable (esp. the constipated Jada Smith) and even the movie poster looks cheap & terrible IMO

5/10 and that's being generous

Spot on.

Let's be honest, anything past the first Matrix movie sucks.

That is the popular opinion and I can even see why people feel that way, but I do have a soft spot for Reloaded - it was shallow compared to the original, but it had great actions scenes, esp. the highway chase scene and some of the fights. So I do like that one.

I didn't think much of Revolutions, although it wasn't a bad movie by itself. But both Reloaded and Revolutions are masterpieces compared to this botched abortion of an unwanted, unnecessary sequel. There is literally nothing I liked about this flick :(

reply

Umm no.

reply

Yep. Pretty much put up the same performance in Bill and Ted 3. He's clearly made these new movies out of a sense of obligation to the filmmakers and fans.

Anyone who comes into contact with Jesus Christ naturally compromises themselves.... yes, I don't live normal life like other people, perhaps I've got some non-sexual notion of the heart going on in order to keep my sexual side secret or sub-modally away from the Earth flesh and that affects people I come into contact with. Keanu is just deluded not knowing what to believe.

reply

He's been phoning it in for a few years now, including the John Wick films.

reply

Absolutely agreed. He was so boring in this movie. It worked in the first one because we were all learning what the matrix is and shit. Now we had to wait for Neo to catch up to where we already were. He looked too old and tired to be in this movie.

reply

The gaffers seemed pretty checked out.

reply

Don't see why he even checked in. Not like he needs the cash.
