So unlike Cool Runnings, none of this was filmed...

...in Calgary?

reply

That's sadly funny. And not surprising.

reply

The Canadian scenes in The Wolverine were also NOT filmed in Canada.

reply

And Star Wars was not filmed in space.

Hoth was filmed in Norway. (The Empire Strikes Back).

reply

As Anson Mount says when asked why he filmed in Alberta (including Calgary) in place of Nebraska Wyoming etc for Hell on Wheels .... it's expensive to move productions from place to place, believe me.

reply

Yes, it is because there is usually so many people involved and its costs alot to transport a movie team and all the heavy equipment.

reply

However, some of the parts supposedly in Japan WERE filmed in Canada! =P

reply

The Martian wasn't filmed on Mars either.

reply

It doesn't look like any of it was filmed in Cheltenham or Gloucester either which is a shame as Matson ski slope hasn't changed much since then.

reply

Star Wars wan't filmed in space? I find this hard to believe.

the swiss, the countries sports board seeing ski jumper as embarrassment, a trainer whom is disgraced from the sport he's teaching in. No similarities what so ever. not Not NOT!

You've obviously misunderstood the thread title.

reply

In a recent interview with director Dexter Fletcher for one of the screenings of EDDIE THE EAGLE, he said that there were no longer working ski jumping facilities in Calgary.

reply

Much like your post, none of it was typed using your brain.

Does the word "budget" mean anything to you. Granted you where trying to be funny, one would assume? Although I could be wrong, but please do correct me if I am.

Films are never usually shot in the places they are supposed to be. Like most people have commented already, with varying degrees of humour I might add.

It's like Troy, Gladiator, Spartacus, Ben Her etc were not filmed in ancient historical times. Time machines have not and never will be invented if at all for years to come let alone to film movies like Back To The Future.

'It's like Troy, Gladiator, Spartacus, Ben Her etc were not filmed in ancient historical times.'

OMG spoiler alert!

reply

Wait a minute, you mean TV wrestling is NOT real? WTF!!!!!!!

reply

All you need is snow and Ski jump slope. I guess there was no need to go to Calgary.

It's that man again!!

But the moment was in Calgary! Sure, the city itself has change considerably since 1993 or 1988 for that matter (an old footage establishing shot could have achieved this), but the Ski Jump has mostly remained the same.

They could have done the aerial shot and used the exact same ski jumps for the Olympic scenes, even if most of the training was dramatized (Eddie really trained on Lake Placid's ski jumps).

reply

I agree. It is very disappointing to me that this was filmed in England and Germany. Calgary has all of the services for filming movies outdoors (and indoors for that matter). The ski-jump facilities at Canada Olympic Park are still available for "high performance athletic training." There are ski jumping facilities in Whistler, BC - the venue for the 2010 Olympics. The Greater Vancouver area is the site where many TV and movies are filmed. So it's not for a lack of filming venues, and not really a monetary issue given the recent state of the Canadian dollar.

In addition, I would love to see some mention of the Jamaican bobsled team (Haven't been the movie yet; doesn't open here until tomorrow, February 26th). Throughout the 1988 Olympics, the Jamaican team and Eddie the Eagle were referred to almost in the same breath. They were both thought of by many athletes as being laughing stocks, degrading the name and spirit of the Olympics. (The International Olympic Committee made a rule in 1988 that "Eddie the Eagle" type athletes would no longer permitted to participate in future Olympics.) However, many Calgarians and Canadians adopted the Jamaicans and Eddie as being underdogs whom they loved. I should know. I lived in Calgary during the 88 Olympics, and had friends who were volunteers at Canada Olympic Park who shared their experiences. I now live in Vancouver, BC and lived through the 2010 Olympics: IMO the 88 Winter Olympics was far better because Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsled team made that particular Olympics memorable - as compared to the other events which took place over the past 28 years, which have failed to make any real impression on my mind.

All of this being said, I look forward to seeing this film.
