it was cheesy, but it worked. there's heart right there in the story.

Ha ha yeah I agree, that dialogue was rather disjointed. I think that part of the movie annoyed me the most. It seemed like the director might have said, "just ad lib some stuff here!" and they just made up some of the dialogue on the spot. It might have been totally scripted, but it just comes off as awkward.
