Like I like the idea behind it and it ALMOST had me until I literally started to feel like I was watching a Battle Royale remake. Change it to kids and an island and it's all there. The exploding heads using a microchip implant especially may as well be exploading collars. And the "kill this many or we kill this many" is a pathetic attempt to make it look different. Pass.

But seriously, I don't think Battle Royale can claim monopoly on the concept of arena battle any more than Halloween can claim monopoly on slasher flicks (if that even was the first slasher flick?). It's how that concept is used that decides whether it's a rip off.
As for the bombs in/on/around heads, they're the go-to tool of scriptwriters these days! Even Mission Impossible had them. There isn't much out there that achieves so much shorthand in such a short time.
Was John Ostrander's Suicide Squad the birth of the explody-collars, I wonder? Always been curious about that...
shareWhile you have fair points literally every plot point in this movie screams the actual movie. There isn't one concept here executed differently as far as I can tell.
For the record I am not one of those people that goes around saying Battle Royale is the be all end all of this genre. I've defended against arguments about The Hunger Games is a ripoff more times than I can count.
But for real the ripping off in this specific movie in the trailer alone is GLARINGLY obvious and I'm hardly the only person noticing it. Just about everywhere I look people are noticing.
For me, I think the difference is clear in the trailer. "Kill 3 or we will kill 6", and then upping the ante from there. Thematically, it seems to draw more from 2015's film, Circle, than Battle Royale imo.
