Is there a single example of replacing a male character with a female one being popular with fans?

Lets look at the evidence:

Ghostbusters 2016
New Starwars trilogy
Terminator Dark Fate
Star Trek Disease
Doctor Who

I am sure I am missing some spectacular flops here, but they were probably very forgettable.

I understand that Hollywood goes through different trends, but as far as I can tell, those were always based on certain movies being very successful and trying to capitalize on and replicate that success. How long is hollywood going to continue to pursue a proven losing strategy?

Battlestar Galactica for some , but not for me

reply

Considering I'm not even aware of this, it can't have been a huge hit.

Pretty sure they've gone for a third incarnation of The Equalizer, changing to a female lead as well. No idea if it's been successful. So, it's gone from white male, to black male, to black female. Can't wait to see what they do next /s

There's plenty of strong female characters out there

Ripley from Alien
Xena
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I don't get why Smith lied and destroyed Adam/He-Man and then Destroyed Teela other than that's the Norm these days and the way he was so Gleeful about it makes me sick

Fuck Kevin Smith

reply

Dude we get it already.

You gonna keep following me around? Get off my dick

reply

Bill & Ted 3 did it too, but was more mediocre than offensive

reply

Damn, I completely forgot about that movie. I completely forgot to even watch it...

reply

You are not missing anything

I don't remember no Switcheroo on that one.

the daughters were implied sons in the original films

People really don't like it when a movie or TV show negates a beloved character or a much better entity, like when you had Alien 3 that said "Screw Aliens, that happy ending doesn't matter we're doing this thing where everybody dies", or 2009 Star Trek "Yeah all previous Trek don't count no more and we are the actually timeline you need to follow" or Transformers The Movie having Optimus Prime dies.

reply

Transfromers the Movie is not really bad at all. Its better than the Bay movies. And when the 2009 Star Trek came out. A alot of people did like it. Even tho it wasn't that good.

Mad Max Fury Road, which i find overrated and prefer the Mel Gibson series

reply

Ditto!

reply

That's actually my favorite Mad Max movie. Furiosa was the main character of the movie, but Mad Max himself was not downgraded, he just didn't talk much. I would argue that is more of an example of a female character enhancing the movie rather than downgrading a male character to make a female character look good.

reply

As a life-long Max fan, that one just baffles me to no end.

The first film is the story of a sane man living in insane times, fighting a hopeless battle against the encroaching chaos until he gets inevitably swept away by it. The second follows that same man, once a father and a husband, now reduced to a misanthropic, aimless wanderer, living off whichever scraps of a dead world he can scavenge from anyone who would try do the same to him only to, against his own best judgement, eventually rediscover his own humanity and empathy for his fellow man. The third was basically just the second yet again, except not quite as good.

And then there's Furious Furiosa, in which all the most shallow, superficial trappings of the second and third films - junkyard tribal aesthetics and big chase scenes - are apparently taken for the story's actual substance, and topped off with a whole bunch of image filters, CGI and explosions, in which a character named "Max Rockatansky" only (barely) features to justify using that title for nostalgia bait.

reply

Don't forget The Hitcher. Completely destroyed the psychology of the first one with the pathetic she-boot.

The Thing is the only half decent one I can think of.

reply

I didn't even realise there'd been a she-boot of The Hitcher!

reply

It would have been best left unrealised

reply

What Star Trek Disease. i don't remember that movie.
