I agree that the camerawork and editing was pretty cool. And I agree they were TRYING to be fresh, but this thing was a mess. The film Kids was fresh, and Montiel's first film A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints was great. In Fighting he seemed to be trying to put too much responsibility on the shoulders of the actors by getting them to improvise scenes within a watered down, weak storyline.
(Side note: The best equivalent I can give to this is if the cast and director of Raising Victor Vargas (good) was given the script to Take The Lead (average) and told to make it work without having to stick to the script or even rehearse.)
