Does she ever ride her bike UPHILL?

An elegant movie. Does Sandrine/Helene ever ride a bike UPHILL, guess actors aren't paid for that bit of sweat. Loved the themes, life lessons and serenity. Well done.

Hahaha! I noticed that as well. She only rides downhill, freewheeling most of the time. I guess it makes the shot a lot shorter than having her heaving over a long climb.

I too was just a little amused each time she was riding downhill, only. I would gladly peddle all the way home, uphill, to live in such a beautiful location.

Sounds like the movie Il Postiano shot in Italy. Beautiful scenery and plot in it too. In Postiano, the rural postman asks an exiled poet from Chile how to woo a local girl with words. The main character had cancer in real life and was very weak. You saw him coast on his bike while delivering mail mostly down hill. He died as soon as the movie was completed before it was released. I think it was shot on the Amalfi Coast.

Graceful comment. Good memory, Mr. Chicago, ......I loved Il Postino. Was it pablo neruda? yes, won a Nobel Prize for literature.

Film wiki

The Italian film Il Postino, inspired by Antonio Skármeta's 1985 novel Ardiente Paciencia (Ardent Patience, later known as El cartero de Neruda, or Neruda's Postman), centers on the story of Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret) living in exile on Salina Island near Sicily during the 1950s. While there, he befriends the local postman and inspires in him a love of poetry.

Since this is the movies, the heroine's rise to the top will always be a ride downhill.

Late to this thread - but I too thought of this and smiled during those sequences. Her bike is not set up for steep hill climbing either. So I decided she bikes one way (down) and she rides the bus home after working. ;-) Many buses have bike carriers. It's what I would do.

Excellent film. If the cyclist if pumping hard to get up a hill we will focus on the effort and not so much on the scenery as we are being introduced to the area.
