Plausible?

I liked the movie as a work of art, but I wonder if it is at all plausible that a woman that age could get that good at chess that quickly.

Nope. Any tournament with 1500 Euros as a first prize will be visited by masters, probably also grandmasters. IM's and GM's have got there with at least 5-10 years of extremely hard work (say, 6-8 hours/day) and well-chosen high level tournaments for practice and gaining rating points. Note that this holds also for child prodigies. From what I could tell, she was taking lessons for about half a year with 2h/week with a coach and (say) 2h/day without after bedtime. It requires huge suspension of disbelief to believe that she got anywhere close to master level.

Probably not.

The film was trying to run with the idea that she was a late blooming prodigy. It wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility but those chances are extremely slight.

Anyway this was just one tournament. I think Helene will go to plenty where she will not win. The most important thing is that she took a step to follow her passion.

It's possible, but very unlikely. We see virtually nothing of the games in the film (sadly), but I think the suggestion is strongly made that she is a real emerging talent, such as when Kroger and her play a game without the board and pieces late in the film. 🐭
