David Tennant for Rincewind!

Well, everyone else here has an opinion, so heres mine.

Tennant would have been excellent I reckon. He's a great actor, can do manic/petrified/running away, and is a more suitable age.

I think David Jason looked the part pretty well (from the Kirby drawings anyway) but just didnt play it right. He wasnt scared, sarcastic or inept. Just kind of bored and confused.

My 2 cents.

Thank you.

I have to say that I imagine David Tennant as Carcer every time I read "Night Watch". I think he would be perfect for that role - manic and innocent at the same time. And I believe John Barrowman would make a great Greebo in Human form ;)

reply

I hear David Jason is great in the part- spot on. Ah well...to each their own!

reply

Pratchett always said it should have been Nicholoas Lyndhurst for Rincewind. I can only assume some confusion resulted in the other one from fools and horses getting the role.

reply

"Pratchett always said it should have been Nicholoas Lyndhurst for Rincewind."

I've never known him say that. Where did you hear it?

reply

Definitely agree, I doubt many could do Rincewind better than Lyndhurst. Additionally, I believe Christopher Lee would make an excellent Vetinari (whoever cast Jeremy Irons is a complete dolt). On another front, David Tennat would make a passable M. von Lipwig at the very least, D. Jason might work as Modo, or as Windle Poons, and I can't get out of my head that J. Cleese could do the Bursar.

reply

David jason asked for the part of rincewind fifteen year's back, and I think he played Rincewind better then most actor's could achieve, As terry pratchett say's no were in the book do'es it described Rincewind being thing and young, thats just the cover illustration'

reply

Actually, in the first book (or is it the second?) Rincewind is mentioned as being 36.

reply

Sorry, but he is not. His alter ego in our world is 33 years old in the aeroplane.

You also have to consider that Discworld years are 800 days long compared to our 365.25 days.

I'm buggered if I know what that means in real terms but 33 years of 800 days is a lot older than 33 years of 365.25 days.

mmm (800*33)/365=72 years old ?

reply

Only one possible choice: Eric Idle.

"Cry mich ein river."

Eric voiced him in the video game and done a great job.

Actually, the cover of The Colour of Magic depicts Rincewind as being old.

But the book definently describes him as being "scrawny, like most wizards", or something like that. It is suggested that he is young, since he looks like an apprentice enchanter. But, to be fair, I am not entirely sure what an apprentice enchanter would look like, let alone what age one would be.

Kirby's covers aren't very faithful to the book, though...

Paul Kidby's drawings of Rincewind are more faithful to the book descriptions; tall, thin, red hair and quite young. As someone mentioned early 30's according to his alter ego.

I have to admit David jason did a pretty good job with it, but I still think they should have made Rincewind that old.
I'd haave casted Mackenzie Crook or David Wenham, I think.

I liked Jeremy Irons as Vetinari, but I had a bit of trouble understanding him (English isn't my first language, and I have a bit of trouble when people don't speak clearly)
But Alan Rickman would've been great too.

reply

David Tennant as Rincewind?

No. Cant see it. I allways imagined Rhys Ifans as Rincewind!

David Tennant on the otherhand (and yeah..I could see John Barrowman as Greebo in human form as previously said) I could see as Moist von Lipwig from Going Postal + Making Money.

Beware Trolls! I'm stomping across your bridge

reply

Totally agree - David Tennant would make the ideal Moist von Lipwig :)

reply

I just don't get David Jason as Rincewind either. 1) He's too old and 2) he's too short and stocky. He was absolutely perfect for Albert, but Rincewind? Please!

I would have loved Nigel Planer to play Rincewind. His character (Sydney) in Hogfather looked much more like my (and apparently Paul Kidby's too) image of Rincewind.

And Sean Astin(!!) as Twoflower?!? What?!? He's supposed to be Asian. They couldn't find a single Asian actor? Who the heck did the casting for this thing?

reply

Actually thats a perfect idea. I was really struggling to figure out who I would fit as a good Rincewind and you are completely correct Nigel Planer as Rincewind would be perfect.
Oh adn Sean Astin as Twoflower was terrible, but I think it was an entire PC thing.
Saying that Jeremy Irons was a very good casting decision as was Christopher Lee.

David Tennant would make a quite decent Moist Von Lipwig, but a terrible Rincewind. He has a very trust worthy face and would really suit the part. ^_^

reply

Now Tennant as Moist is a fabulous idea! Especially as Going Postal is allegedly the next film on the agenda. Plus Doctor Who is going to be taking breaks soon (starting in 2009) so he would probably have the time to do it.

"So long... and thanks for all the fish"

reply

Clearly you didn't see him in Harry Potter.

reply

The guy who plays Hiro in Heroes would have been amazing for Twoflower..

Yataaaa!!

reply

Any random chinese lookin guy would be perfect.

reply

My money would be on MacKenzie Crook

reply

Rhys Ifans would have been perfect for Rincewind.

reply

Rhys Ifans would have been perfect for Rincewind.

I think he'd make a better Mort - though perhaps he's a little old. Mort "appeared to have been built out of knees". Rincewind is also getting on a - he has been "20 years before the staff" and as a Discworld year is 800 days Rincewind must be at least 43 even is he left UU the day he was born!

reply

I guess my characterisation of Rincewind may have been distorted by the Discworld adventure games and the graphic novels. They tend to portray Rincewind as a pretty tall and slim, 30-something male. In fact, I always associate Eric Idle's voice with Rincewind too.

reply

I think that's very true. Terry doesn't do descriptions much, so our mental image flops around looking for guidance, and if an artist provides some it's very difficult not to let it in. My mental image of Rincewind is from Josh Kirby's covers (cos I predate the computer games) but anyone who came to the games first is bound to have that as primary image. I imagine Vimes as the actor (now sadly deceased) who played him for Stehphn Briggs theatre company, others will imagine him as Clint Eastwodd because of the Magnum Force gag in Guards! Guards! or the Paul Kidby illustrations - bur Terry says he looks like Pete Postlethwaite! (So any Discworld readers currently aged two and entering the series via Where's My Cow? will have the right image, as Melvyn Grant painted him that way!)

reply

I think I have the same problem as you, Ersan. My first experience with Discworld was through the Adventure game by Perfect and Psygnosis, in which Rincewind is clearly (or at least in appearance) several decades younger than the UU faculty.

When I got to reading the books I pictured Rincewind as being mid-to-late 30's, and with that mental-picture, when I saw Shaun of the Dead, I thought Simon Pegg would be great to portray him in a film.

reply

But Rincewind can still run like a demon (away, that's the important part) and I just can't see David Jason sprinting from dryads, Agatean guards, bad-tempered heroines, etc, the way Rincewind always manages to. Also, I think if he was old, wouldn't certain characters like Conina have mentioned it? I've always had him as being somewhere in his mid- to late-thirties. I think Jason was a bad choice. Definitely Tennant, Ifans, or Atkinson (a few years ago) would've been great.

reply

Eric Idle voiced him in the game, and I thought he would be excellent to play him in a movie...

reply

wow! ive always seen eric idle as rincewind but i never thought of david tennant! the mans a legend!
id like to see him as rincewind! thatd be fun :D

reply

I'd have loved it if rowan atkinson was rincewind. Somehow Rincewind in my mind always had a bit of physical comedy to him. Rowan's voice especially during his black adder days would've been perfect.

For twoflower, the actor that played the asian las vegas church pastor in chuck and larry, would've been perfect, though not PC enough. Sean astin certainly doesn't fit into my picture of a bes pelargic tourist.

He can do manic. And manic. And manic. And no, he can't act. Or at least I've never seen him act, despite sitting through a year and a half of him as Doctor Who.

He is, however, the right build for Rincewind, IMO. So is WeirdAl.
