I just saw this moving in Tokyo, it is in theaters now; but they changed the title from "My Sister's Keeper" (Which in Japanese should be maybe, Watashi no Shimai kippu shiteru hito) to "Watashi no naka no anata" which means, "you inside me"

Yeah Japanese and Chinese translations can be bizzare sometimes. I remember, back when Pepsi were marketing under the slogan: "Come alive with Pepsi!" the literal Japanese translation became: "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead".

Well, if you look at some of the subtitles that get approved I hardly think there's any serious double-checking from anyone. Luckily I turn of the subtitles nowadays and it makes it a whole lot easier to focus on the film.

shareI am Japanese-English bilingual, and I do agree with you that the movies imported into Japanese theatres are often given pretty ridiculous names.
But in this case I'd have to say you're thinking with an English-speaker's mind.
In Japanese "Watashi no naka no anata" doesn't sound porny at all-- it just sounds that way to you because you're translating the Japanese words into English words, instead of translating the Japanese meaning into English meaning. (Translation should always be translation of meaning, not words.)
"Watashi no naka no anata" is actually quite a poetic title. If I had to translate it it would be "The You Inside of Me." Every one of us sees a piece of someone else in our hearts. Anyone can relate to the idea of human connection and feeling at one with someone else-- I think that's what this title is referring to.
Your translation "Watashi no shimai kippu shiteru hito" would basically be "The Person Keeping My Sisters" which is way creepier.
The title "The You Inside of Me" probably comes from the fact (if you read trivia for the movie) that in the book Anna is killed in an car crash at the end and her kidney is donated to Kate and Kate then goes into remission. So part of Anna ends up in Kate in the form of her donated kidney. That was my initial thought when I read what the Japanese title is.
