Am I the only one who thought it was weird that...

...a 12 year old girl was having a romantic relationship with a guy who looked about 20...and the parents were okay with it? They also did the dance with no pants.

Why do you presume she is 12? She was diagnosed with cancer when she was aged around 3/4, her younger sister Anna was created AFTER that and she is 11 in the movie making Kate 15-17.

making Kate 15-17.

Yeah, but she LOOKED extremely young. She could honestly pass for 11, while the guy could have passed for 25. As soon as I saw him I thought, "Ohhhh, he was miscast" because the mother's first thought should have been "How OLD is this guy that's hitting on my underage daughter?!"

reply

In the book Anna was thirteen so Kate had to be around eighteen or nineteen when all this was going on. Kate was around four or five when she was diagnosed with whatever it was she had.

You also have to remember that both Kate and Taylor were undergoing intense treatments for cancer - I know a woman that after she got breast cancer it aged her at least 10 years. And not everyone is going to be affected the same way by it, and if you notice at the end of the movie when Kate is getting closer to death (and I don't mean this to sound as harsh as it does) they started making her look sicker and inevitably she also looked older.

Plus the actress that played Kate, sofia vassilieva, has somewhat of a baby-face to me.

16 and 21 were the ages of the two actors at the time, FYI.
Although, I admit, the relationship was creepy and pervy, especially as (I recall) the mother encouraged it with a weirdly unhealthy interest - but I suppose they were all rushing things along before death. Kind of made the film more adult though, which is probably right as the other themes are adult too really.

Weren't they receiving chemo in the pediatric oncology part of the hospital? I remember him mentioning they were having some sort of a "prom" and most of the people there seemed to be teenagers, he might have looked old, but I think it was mostly because he was really tall and his attitude.
Her parents seemed to be OK with it because I think they were happy she was experiencing love while she still could. Also he was very respectful of her, and of them.

I know this is an old post. But it was stated in the movie she was 15 yrs old.

As others have noted, she was not 12 and he was not 20. I got the feeling Taylor was maybe 2-4 years older than Kate. The other reason, though? Imagine for a moment you have a child that is never really expected to have a "normal" lifespan. You grieve for all the things they won't get to experience. College, love, marriage, kids, whatever else they might want. I took Sara's interest in Taylor to be "Maybe my baby girl will actually have a chance to experience love before she dies." If you remember, Sara also got super pissed when Kate told her that they "did stuff." She was still a quasi-reasonable mother, at least in regards to age-appropriate relationship stuff. But if you are pretty sure your kid isn't going to make it to 20, wouldn't you want to encourage a relationship if she happened across one before then? Especially one like Taylor where he wasn't abusive or horrible. He was another cancer kid, he understood her more than anyone in her family ever could, and he was sweet. It was an experience that Kate was beyond fortunate to have, and I think her entire family was grateful that she met Taylor. Plus Kate was so obviously excited by Taylor asking for her number. Probably in part because she felt unattractive as a cancer patient, even to another cancer patient. Sara wanted Kate happy. Simple as that, really.

Wasn't she 15 or 16? And he was in the adolescent area as well and was about 17 or 18. It didn't look weird, although I know the actor was slightly older.
