Is Metallica going to have a part in this movie?

I was wondering this because Metallica actually own the rights to this movie. They bought it back in 1989 so they could use clips in their video for "One". Anyone know anything about this?

no, in reality, Metallica does own the rights to this movie.

YES, Metallica's song "One" is used in the new film; although I can not disclose how or where.

YES, Metallica did buy the rights to the 1971 film version for the video.

NO, Metallica does not own the film rights to the new film; those rights were licensed jointly by the Dalton Trumbo's estate and playwright, Bradley Rand Smith. The film starring Ben McKenzie is based on the one-person stage version of the novel which was originally performed Off-Broadway by Jeff Daniels in 1982 -- 98% of the dialogue in the new film is taken directly from the book.

Other Metallica trivia related to the new film version of JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN -
The editor, Jay Cassidy, is good friends with Lars Ulrich. Mr. Cassidy was editing the film while at the same time finishing up editing on Sean Penn's INTO THE WILD. He discusses the new software used to edit the film in an interview in the current issue of Filmmaker Magazine.

I'm excited about it too.

Hah, I was wondering if they were going to use "One". Sweet!

It was Metallica's "One" that caused me to pick up the book and read it in the first place. I've been trying to find the original movie ever since. I sincerely hope this movie doesn't suck.

Ditto for me!! I was blown away by the book after I read it.

Metallica was the death of metal, they missed a large point and emphasis of literature. Johnny Got His Gun still remains one of my 5 favorite books.

reply

Does anybody know when they are planning on putting the 1971 movie out on a DVD that can be played by U.S. DVD players?

reply

This is so not the case, if this thread isn't too old for people to see. Johnny Got His Gun was a large cult classic many many years before the Metallica song. If the video brings people to the story, more power to it, but Metallica was inspired by the movie and the song is a tribute to its impact on them, and you cannot credit Metallica in any way with the cultural impact of this film beyond the truth that some metal fans became aware of it because of the video.

This film is owned by World Entertainment, which has absolutely no affiliation with Metallica in any way what so ever. Metallica paid World Entertainment for the use of clips from this film to use in the video for "One". Let's keep in mind, if a band owned any movie that appeared in the bands videos, let's see, Evanescence would own "Daredevil", Celine Dion would own "Titanic", etc. Metallica has NO OWNERSHIP of this film, and pays royalties each time "One" is either aired on tv or is sold on video or dvd. Before coming and insisting that your right with all certainty, do you research. And personally, I would love to see 1 single thing showing any of the members of Metallica as owners of this film. Documentation, a press release, etc. Anything beyond your personal assumption. And for further information, this is the website for the company that DOES own the 1971 version of "Johnny Got His Gun". Feel free to contact them regarding it. http://worldentertainment.net/

Let's clear up a little myth here....

Metallica paid for the right to use clips of Johnny Got His Gun in their video. They DID NOT buy ownership rights of this film. The film was originally released and owned by World Entertainment. World Entertainment was bought out by MGM. The DVD rights to this film are currently owned by Shout! Factory Entertainment. Shout entertainment has ties to Warner Brothers and is owned by a former Warner exec. Metallica has NO OWNERSHIP of this film. Never has.

Here is a link to Shout! Factory's wikipedia page.

Please notice Johnny Got His Gun is listed.

For all of the people claiming Metallica's ownership of this film, please provide a link giving proof. This has long been rumor on these boards and no one has EVER provided any kind of proof besides "yeah I read it one time way back...."

The editor who cut the Ben McKenzie filmed stage version of 'Johnny Got His Gun', Jay Cassidy, is good friends with Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica. Lars confirmed that they only bought the rights to use certain "clips" from the '71 film in the ONE video.

danimal97520 is 100% correct... and that's directly from Lars Ulrich, end of discussion.

reply

I think they're not necessarily attached to the project since they bought the rights of the 1971 movie, and not the rights of the novel.

Personally I'd love it if "One" was in the soundtrack. Plus it'd be a smart move since theyd be reaching a very big target (Metallica fans).
After all the original movie was a minor success until it was used in One's video, THEN it became a cult classic.

Plus it's a great nostaligia-like thingy to include elements of an original in a remake (i. e., Lou Ferrigno having a cameo un Hulk (2003), Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck having cameos in the remake of Cape Fear (1991), Richard Roundtree in Shaft (2000) and list goes on and on...)

This is a story that takes place in WWI, "One" would be flagrantly anachronistic.

reply

that hasn't stopped period movies/tv from doing it many times before. but still I think hearing such a famous modern song would totally kill the mood for me watching it though

reply

cool..first thing i thought of when reading the description of this film was the video from One. Still one of my favorite videos. Had to go to the 3rd page of the forums to find this thread heh

World Entertainment owns the rights to the original film. NOT Metallica. They paid for the right to use clips in their video for "One". Nothing more. It is still owned by World Entertainment and is for sale in Europe, but World Entertainment. I love the original film and the video for "One" but people, get the facts straight. Frankly, had Metallica bought the rights for this film, they would have released it here in the U.S. (i.e. make a profit off your investment....and being they are said to love this film, youd see it on video here). Once again, World Entertainment owns it and is said to have no interest in releasing it at the present time, because they feel there isnt enough demand to make it worth while. The original is a great film though. Check it out on youtube. The whole film is there and available to view. Great book too.

My guess is that the song will be used in the end credits. Thats my guess at least.

reply

No offence (yeah I love the song "one" and have since it came out) but if all you guys only have interest in this movie due to the possiblity of the song being in the movie, why bother seeing it. Listen to the damned cd. Watch the movie cause it appealshttp://en-US.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/central/
Getting Started to you. Not cause of a song.

reply

I'm going to see it because it looks like an interesting movie. I'd just like One to be in there as a nice touch.

danimal97520 - i saw the video to 'one' by metallica, and thats has me desperately trying to find some version of the story...dont deny that that video has alot more people interested in this film...if they didnt use the song in the film...imagine how many idiots would refuse to then see this movie based purely on that fact...

methinks its just clever marketing...

mebbe they'll use it over the credits, who knows?

I hope you can find yourself a copy of the movie Kalm. Search for it on youtube. It's all there. Great movie. I just think that it's unfortunate that no one talks about wanting to see the movie for the movie. It's all about a twenty year old song. I love "One" don't get me wrong. But if people won't go see a movie because a song isn't on the soundtrack, then it's their loss frankly. I've seen nothing what so ever to show the song is in the movie, with the exception of all the Metallica fans saying "yeah i heard its in there for sure". Typical rumor mill b.s. I'd bet money it won't be in the movie, because the film maker's won't want the distraction to the movie. It is after all based on a book, not a Metallica video, as some fans tend to forget...

reply

'Danimal' has some good points and I too hope that now that people have an interest in the movie, they'll still go and see it regardless of Metallica's involvement.
But the only reason I, along with many others, even know about the movie is because of Metallica. Do I want 'One' in the movie? You bet I do. Even if this movie turns out to be the greatest film ever made, we'll all still be sitting here going "Man it could've been even better had 'One' been at the end".
It could try for the mantle of 'most watched end credits ever'. Who has that title now anyway?

reply

i dont want to see it because of the metallica song, the song just brought to my attention a film which looked intriguing, i dont care what relevance the song does or doesnt have to the movie, just be thankful fans of the movie that metallica have allowed another way for people to discover the movie!!!

"This is a story that takes place in WWI, "One" would be flagrantly anachronistic."

Has anyone heard the Metallica S&M Album? It's Metallica playing over the San Fransisco Symphony Orchestra. I think an orchestral version of this song, without the electric instruments and lyrics, could be quite powerful. It's very simple and would be quite easy to translate to symphonic music.

reply

Hey as a fan of both the song, and movie, Id have no problem with the song being in the new movie. My point isn't that. My point is, Metallica fans assume the band owns the original movie, which is far from true. World Entertainment holds ownership.

reply

Perhaps I'm being a smart-alec, but has anybody read the book. It was published in 1939, and thus has been available to the public thirty years before the first version of the movie was made, and even more before the Metallica song game out. If you haven't read by now it, I suggest you do. It is pretty good. -SRC

reply

they didn't buy the rights to the whole movie, they had to pay for the clips they used...anyway that "Metallica", sadly, does not exist anymore....

reply

JeffMiller84, Metallica bought the rights to the 1971 movie. This movie is the play on film.
