Oliver

What condition did Oliver have? .. Oliver was the boy with the raw skin and very little hair...

I think it must be something like E.B., which stands for Epidermolysis Bullosa.

Basically, the skin grows at a very fast rate and cannot stay healthy. It blisters, bleeds, splits and falls off at the slightest touch. Life expectancy is not as long as a healthy person and it hurts ever such a lot, as infection is a constant threat.

It really can be a very debilitating condition, but there is always ongoing research to try and raise understanding and awareness. It is also a genetic condition and is not contagious.

You may remember someone called Jonny Kennedy: he was a man who died of it. As he neared the end of his life he made an amazing documentary for channel 4. It was called "The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off". The documentary is available through "Channel 4 on Demand". If you go to www.channel4.com and download the software for 4oD, you can watch it on your computer. It was an inspirational story and terribly sad. But Jonny made it a great narrative of his own personal journey for acceptance and he injected a lot of humour in it as well.

But yes, I reckon that is the condition which little Oliver had.

I thought he had been in a fire?

You could be right, but I thought it was E.B. because the doctors were trying to find a cure for him and it was an incurable disease.

Also, he tells of a very long, unhappy childhood where he was continually bullied for as long as he remembered. If it had been that long, burns would probably not look like that. There would be angry scarring all over his body, but the skin wouldn't just come away. Come to think of it, if he had been that severely burnt all over his body, he would almost certainly have died. 100 years ago they didn't have the same treatments for burns as they do now.

Any other thoughts?

I remember him saying to one of the nurses that he liked to touch a patch of unaffected skin on the palm of his hand as it reminded him of before "it" happend. This made me think that maybe he was burned in an acident. Or maybe he developed a serious skin condition as he got older.
