Was Daniel in the book(s)?

I am unable to read much anymore, which makes me so sad. I have the book but my concentration is mostly gone now. I would like to know if Daniel is a main character and if he is Laura's boyfriend, fiance, or husband in the books. I've watched the series many times and I find Daniel's character more irritating with each watching. If he is a main character in the books, is he as pompous, selfish, and such a know-it-all? Perhaps I missed his better than thou attitude the first several viewings because of Ben Aldridge's looks!!! 😉 Thank you so much.
