The word 'Like'

Is it possible for these girls on this show to complete an entire sentence without saying the word "like"?

reply

Like, I really don't think that's, like, possible.

I'm happiest...in the saddle.

reply

It's cute when they say that.

reply

Ash, you're just in love with all of these little bitches.

I'm happiest...in the saddle.

reply

Oh my GOD!!! I never even noticed until the scene in Allie's apartment with her friend talking about Chase. So annoying!

reply

That's the exact scene where I noticed it too! I agree, so very annoying!!!

reply

I noticed it in that scene too. I mean, I say "like" often but not to that extent. And even they didn't annoy me until that scene. It was as if they were overdoing it on purpose.

reply

I say "like" a lot. So do all the other young people here in Southern California. I'm assuming none of you are Californians? You try growing up here and omitting "like" from your vocabulary.

reply

I am from So Cal and have lived here my entire life. Somehow I've managed to only use the work "like" when appropriate. A lot of people do. Not all Californians speak that way.

reply

I'd also like to add that just because you are incapable of saying "like" more than 5 times in one sentence, doesn't mean everyone from California (who has grown up here) is. A lot of us are educated and are not grammatically challenged.

reply

Uneducated and grammatically challenged? What the hell is your problem? You don't even know me.
Please, do tell me. Do I sound uneducated and grammatically challenged?
And actually, if you come here to Orange County, 80% of the teenage population overuses "like." You can't help it. The English can't exactly say "Ok, I'm going to stop talking with an accent now," can they?
Heck, the completely genius Chinese guy in my Global Perspectives class uses "like" a lot. I can assure you, he's not uneducated or grammatically challenged.

reply

I don't have a problem with you. I had a problem with you basically implying that most young people from California talk like that. We don't. I said uneducated and grammatically challenged because that's what people sound like when they constantly say "like" while they're talking (I'm sorry if my post implied that you were uneducated and grammatically challenged). Also, speaking with an accent and saying "like" constantly are not the same thing. Having an accent is part of who you are and where you come from. Overusing the work "like" is not. It's just a trendy way of talking and for some reason some people think it's cute when in acutality the person saying like all the time sounds like an idiot.

reply

that's not just a california thing. i'm from long island & it is a HORRIBLE habit here too. Boys & girls both. My parents use to tell me everytime i said like & i would get pissed at myself when i realized how much i said it

"now it might sound cocky,
but is it really cocky if you know that it's truee?"

reply

That is so true! In my English class freshman year our teacher had us do speeches and everytime someone said 'like' we all had to slam our hands on the desk. You don't realize how much you use it until something like that happens

reply

You're placing your expectations too high. The question is, is it possible for them to complete an entire sentence with less than four "likes?"

reply

Chrissy can't go one sentence without saying it, literally, every other word.
She's worse than Audrina on The Hills.
I say it, but not like they do.

reply

The world 'like' is normal for Californians. I say it a lot too

reply

I noticed right when the first episode aired. Chrissy says "like" A LOT. Aside from her I didn't notice anyone else saying it as much except for Allie in the recent episode.

reply

I remember getting chastised by my parents when I was younger for saying "like" too much. I know I don't say it as much now that I'm in my mid 20s.

But DAMN! The girls on this show are HORRIBLE about it! Allie is the worst. I think that's her name- she had those awful frizzy bangs in the first season, and now she's finally growing them out? Her. Anyway, she and her friend Sam cannot get through a sentence without saying "like" between every single word. I want to murder them. I swear the girls on "The Hills" aren't as bad.

And all the kids on this show have this way of talking.... these certain inflections they use that just get on my nerves. I really hope they all grow out of it.

I agree that at the one scene Allie used like way too much. I know a lot of californian's use the word like. Every state has different words and people in other states think its weird that we say it so much, but it just sticks to our vocabulary. It's hard to find other words to substitute for like sometimes and we don't even realize we say it. I know I don't pay attention to how often I use it unless someone points it out to me.

reply

First off, saying "like" every other word isn't a California thing, it's a young person thing. You might find your parents may say uh or um a lot--kids today say like. It's said in California, New Jersey, Virginia, etc., etc.

People sound stupid when they say "like" too much. If I'm talking to someone and they say "like" a lot, I immediately think he or she (usually she) is of average intelligence--or at the very least doesn't care how he presents himself . Sorry if you aren't stupid/do care how you come across to others, but the easiest thing to do is think before you speak. If people would just take a moment to think about what they want to say before they say it, they can excise it from their speech. Believe me, it's much easier to listen to someone talk when they don't say um, uh, or like 3, 4, or 5 times in every sentence.

Also, to the above poster who said that the English people have an accent...I'm pretty sure it's we Americans who have the accent, not the English..."rolls-eyes."

hahahahahahaha DigitalMarathon that made my day...honestly one of the most outrageous examples of the "like" epidemic plaguing the country...

Thank you for proving the reason why I started this whole discussion in the first place! To show how stupid most of these girls sound.

reply

LMAO!
That vid was hilarious.

I say like a lot but only when I'm nervous.
