To those Californians

I'll admit sometimes when I come across this show, I stay tuned in because I love the beautiful scenery. I've been to California twice, last year I went on a road trip from San Francisco to San Diego. I'd love to move there. It seems like the people are vibrant and laid back. To those who live there, is life more exciting on the west coast? Are there a lot of homeless people overall? I noticed some near beverly hills. btw i'm from nyc and life is blahh here.

reply

Well, I'm a Californian..

Born NorCal, raised SoCal..

Of course, CA is one of the most beautiful states in our country, that's why we have so many people here!!

Yeah, the whole vibe really depends on where you are, I think.

For example, some parts in San Diego have different vibes..

Encinitas - laid-back, chill, beachy vibe.

La Jolla - beachy, but rich vibe.

I would say that life isn't THAT more exciting. Um... it's mostly just the beach and the diversity of people that make California great.

I would say NY is more exciting because it's got a hectic, rushed vibe about the city.. would you say so from your NY viewpoint?

The homeless people.. I can only account for in SD since this is the only place I've lived since I was like 5. There are a lot of homeless people here. Where are there not? lol. They're mostly around downtown, I would say. Or they are mostly around parks and sometimes by the beach.

Of course, some of this stuff may not help, since I know nothing of nightlife (aka nightclubs) b/c I'm not even 18 yet, lol.

Anyways, hope this helps..

You're lucky to live in San Diego! Here in NYC, we are deprived of decent beaches, palm trees and nature. lol The water here would make you want to gag. Yes it is very hectic but it's more frustrating than exciting. Everything moves at a fast pace. I love the diversity, however the people in CA are more unique and better looking. Not to mention the climate, you don't have to deal with humidity. That weather is perfect all year round. In Ny, it gets disgustingly hot.

Yes I do remember seeing a lot of homeless people in downtown San Diego. Do you get earthquakes every now and then?

Anyways thanks for your post!

reply

born in LA and raised all over CA. i have to say i did briefly live in Michigan and truly feel that their is something very special about CA. Great music scenes, culture beaches, food, shopping, you name it. of course there are bad parts to it as well. But i think its truly a one of kind state. of course im biased though.

reply

Let's switch places.. I'll stay in NY for one year and you stay in CA.. and we'll switch every year. Haha I live in Huntington Beach.. right next door to Newport Beach.. I used to work there.. go to Balboa Island all the time.. so.. you'll be near all the people you watch haha.

Yep, I argue. :]

reply

Im right next to you in Seal Beach hah

reply

Yeah, definitely. I love living in SD. We always have regular weather. In the winter, it's cold, but not FREEZING. In the summer, it's hot, but not the Sahara.

The weather is good, but we always have May-Gray and June-Gloom. And then there's the dreaded "Santa Ana" winds.. :/

But.. the surf, sand, and the people make living here worthwhile.

Well, we do get earthquakes, but never to the same scale as like San Francisco or something..

Any earthquakes that have happened in San Diego, I've slept through, lol. So, the earthquakes aren't HUGE here.

I was considering going to NY for college, but I have the undying love for SD in my heart, so I guess I'm going to UCSD. haha.

I don't think I could last in NY, the ocean is too cold and has too many sharks for me to surf. lol.

Are the people in NY really like how movies portray them? (ex. Loud, rude, etc. No offence!)

Harold: ...The universe tends to unfold as it should.

reply

well it depends where in california. I moved to LA like 4-5 years ago and i see a lot of homeless people here.

But it's also cool to live in LA because like what they said in Clueless, "everything in LA is 20 minutes." (well not really 20 minutes, but close) So I can be in downtown LA, then at the beach, then in Hollywood, all in one day.

reply

Where in NY are you from? I have never been to CA, but I would love to go someday. I feel that the east and west coasts are so different, that you can't even compare them by saying one is better than the other. I love NY, especially Manhattan, I feel that there is no other place like it. Just like there is no other place like CA.

And to the poster who asked the question - no, the people in NY are not like they portrayed in the movies. haha...well, maybe a little bit. But personalities, attitudes, and accents are often exaggerated.

reply

I think NY and CA are two very diverse, but beautiful states in their own rights. I love both LA and NYC so dearly that I don't know which to choose for college. I live in NY so I really want to go to California, but I'm afraid to leave what I know so well.

I think there are homeless people in places like San Diego and LA because of the good weather and other things. They want to live there but they donĀ“t have afford to buy a house or rent an apartment.

reply

I am form Tennessee and I have always wanted to go to both places:( I used to like in Cali but I was like 2 and I dont remember.

reply

I'm from Staten Island (the forgotten borough) 30 minutes from Manhattan depending on traffic. Since I've lived here all my life, I'm sick to death of this city but I can see why tourists like it so much. Anyways I'm jealous of those who live in CA because you have the beaches and cities in the same vicinity lol

Are the people in NY really like how movies portray them? (ex. Loud, rude, etc. No offence!)

No not so much in Manhattan maybe in Brooklyn. haha They only come off as rude because everyone's in a big rush but most of them are polite when necessary. But it's like that in any big city.

reply

i'm from orange county(not the rich part, from garden grove/cypress area...still 10/15 minutes from the beach though) i just started college and at first i really wanted to get away, but when the time came to picking a place to go, i couldn't see myself living anywhere but here. the weather is perfect and the beaches are great, what more can a person ask for. but i think it all depends on the lifestyle you have. some people are meant to live in new york and some people are meant to live in southern california, and i guess i'm one of those people. i like to think i'm going to move somewhere else someday, like new york, but to tell you the truth, i don't think that'll ever happen because i love it so much here.

reply

I'm from the OC. :) Buuttt it isn't like ~glamorous like Laguna Beach and Newport Harbor, ahaha. I say my life is pretty normal.. I rarely go to the beach, RARELY. I don't live right by the beach but around 10 minutes away from it. :)

I am from SoCal
It is the absolute best
I mean, my PE period is beach volleyball and my friends take surf PE
You can't do that anywhere else
And eveyone is so laid back
There are teachers who wake up every morning and go surfing just like the rest of us
Not to mention it hardly ever rains

It really is a great place to live

Dang, it's a shame.. you should get to the beach more often. Take advantage of where you live! I went to the Huntington Beach 4 times this week!

Geeez. Haha. I guess I'm not a beach person /: LOL. I hate it when I get sand in my feet. =X I'm such a bad Californian.

born and raised in san diego here =] it's pretty nice if you like the beach and such. i personally hate the beach so i'm happy to live more inland than those beach towns. anyway it's pretty expensive to buy property here. a two bed room two bath condo will run you about 300k at least. but i like that it's close to mexico considering i'm almost 18 and the legal drinking age there is 18. the homeless people i've seen are usually in downtown. i've seen a couple in pacific beach but i think there are some pretty much everywhere in this great land we call america. as for it being more exciting i think life is as exciting as you make it.

I'm from LA...takes about 20 min to get to the beach without traffic. I usually go down to Balboa. The best part of southern California (not "Cali", not "SoCal", just Southern California) is the weather and the diversity. Plenty of art galleries, clubs, boutiques, events. The sky line is beautiful if you ever get a chance to look at it from the San Gabriel mountains. Plus, UCLA is here (go Bruins).

Ehh.. I like to call it Cali.. I guess I listen to too much Tupac, lol.

But, yeah, the diversity is awesome. California is made up of SO many cultures. The restaurants here.. Mexican, Indian, Thai, Korean, American, Chinese, etc.

Balboa Park is pretty cool too, if you guys ever visit here. There are a lot of different, interesting museums and the gardens are beautiful.

Do you guys recommend any places I should visit if I ever go to NY or Tennessee, or etc.?

Honestly, I think you need to experience it for yourself to see if it fits you. There are plenty of advantages but also some disadvantages.

Advantages:

70-80 degree days most of the year
Sunshine
Beaches
Really nice people
The ability to live a healthy lifestyle

Disadvantages:

50 degree nights even in the summer -- Ever wonder why they are always in jackets at those bonfires? That's why. I don't mind it, but some (especially East Coasters) don't like it
The four seasons -- fire, wind, mud, and earthquake
Traffic!!!!!!!!! Anybody that says LA is 20 minutes from anything has never experienced rush hour!
The cost of living. Any house will cost you $1 million easy.

As far as the homeless population goes, I have honestly seen as many in NYC as anywhere else. Some places have it worse than others. Newport Beach really doesn't have a huge homeless population.

That being said, if you are homeless, where would you rather be -- cold and snowy Minneapolis or warm and sunny Southern California? It's only common sense to think that the weather would be a magnet for homeless people, and to some extent, I think it is. But homeless people here, while very sad, are also quite harmless.

And to the earthquake thing, there are some mild tremors but nothing major (at least very often). The fires and mudslides, however, are a real negtive IMHO.

My advice is to come and see for yourself. I'm not talking a 4 day visit. Come and stay a couple of weeks at least. Experience it and then you make the call. No one else can think for you.

I lived in CA for 24 years and just moved to NY a little over a year ago. I am 25 years old and I like the west coast much better, but it is probably because that is all that I have known for most of my life. I still miss it, one day I will move back! As far as homeless people go, they are everywhere in the world, not just CA or beverly hills.

I'm from one of the more frigid parts of Canada, and I've only visited California once, when I was 14 months old. The only things about California that appeal to me now are the weather and the ocean. If I could add those two things to Seattle, I'd have the perfect city.

I am born and raised in california and its really not worth all the fuss. The reality shows you see here make it look glamorous, but there's still poor neighborhoods and there's loads of pollution in L.A. or just about anywhere. If you go to Norcal be prepared for cold weather and not so great beaches. I think Socal is a lot nicer though and there's better scenery. I don't plan on living in California for my whole life, I want to move to the the east coast. Its far too expensive to live here and I'm sick of the weather too.

reply

I live in TX right now, I'm 19, i wasn't completely raised here though, I spent some time in i guess what you would call central Cali right around Pacifica, Hollister and all those small middle port towns... it's a nice place but like the above poster pointed out it really depends on what part... like of course Southern Cal is just about perfect.

reply

I was born and raised in California. I lived in Coto de Caza, yes the neighborhood on the Real Housewives of Orange County. I love it in California but it is very expensive.

reply

It also depends on what part of Los Angeles: the west side--Beverly, Hills, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Brentwood, Bel Air, Malibu, etc.. everything West of La Brea. Or the East side, everything East of La Brea--Downtown L.A., and those poor to lower middle class areas in East and South Los Angeles like Compton, Watts, Boyle Heights, Huntington Park, etc.. If you're born in the Westside you have it made. Most of the OC is beautiful.

I'm from the eastside of Los Angeles. The real Los Angeles. I see the drunks vomiting on the sidewalk on pico, the crack heads down broadway, and the homeless asking for money, so the can eat. Just things that you won't see in places like Newport or Laguna Beach, or Beverly Hills or Bel Air.

reply

Im from San Jose, Honestly, and honestly, I love San Jose, alot of people hate it, but thats because they know it so well.(like any city your raised in)

but being from SJ that means im near almost everything in cali.

now i have been all over the world, literally you name it, ive been there(no more college money..lol) and i can say without flinching, that NOTHING comes close to san fran on a nice summer day, in terms of the vibe, and the beauty, i love everything about the city.

one thing i thing all californians can concede to is that Socal and Norcal culturally are VERY different.

i personally dont like LA that much, comes off as too plastic, but Socal is beautiful in its own right. (going to be going to UCLA so gotta get use to LA anyways)

The Bay area has a VERY uniqe Culture, and i mean UNIQE. from our music, to our art, to our slang.

one place people over look in the bay area is oakland, Its culturally one of the most significant area's in the US, but people overlook it because its crime is so bad! but its really a place people should visit.

anyways, thats my small brief scoop on Cali, basically, no place like it on earth, and like i said, ive been to alotta places around the world, and there is nothing like so-cal or nor-cal.

reply

CA is pretty fun, theres deff. allot going on around here. but where most of the homeless people are is in the LA area...when i went there for a class trip we were on the freeway and there were beds and everything on the side..it was sad but gross...but California is pretty awesome, i don't want to move.

I'm from San Diego too. I live in a more inland suburb which is both extremely rich and lower middle class, Poway. San Diego is alright but the downtown is very businessy. There are some cool areas but I would not call it the most happening city. But honestly you have to live in SoCal sometime. I love it but as soon as I can get out I am going to go see the world. I think that will really show me what a great place this is. Oh and sunsets at the beach make life worth it. :)
