Not a blatent rip off of The Omega Man

...And I couldn't be happier.

It's funny that more than just I enjoy making fun of the remake of the Omega Man that doesn't even bother using the same title. So that's really all the title was, was an attempt to make fun of and try to grab the fame off of an upcoming remake. Normally this kind of misleading title makes me mad, but I'm just glad someone else is on the same page as me with "I Am Legend"

That being said, this movie is not a rip off of the Omega Man. This movie is a kung-fu zombie movie.

Good things:
+ The beginning really helps you identify with the Richard character they were going for.
+ Richard going insane and losing his concept of reality was thorough and not taken for granted like many other movies.
+ The Villan was a very interesting and hate-able guy by not making him the usual "wrestling fan" inspired swipe at southern Americans. The villan was an embodyment of common disagreements with military lifestyle which was very well done.
+ The girl stayed in character, and really let you identify the character. Most actors and actresses are cast based on previous roles. For example Sean Connery was in the Rock because they wanted James Bond. In the case of I Am Omega, Brianna was a clean slate that played a real character, acting mostly as an antagonist based on her attitude, instead of the usual crappy sci-fi flick that chick you see in the shows "7 Days" and "Special Unit 2"
+ The fighting coreography wasn't great, but wasn't bad. In fact it seemed like some of it had some sort of martial arts instructor attempting realism over flashy movie gimics. (Realistic fight scenes tend to seem faker in movies. For example Jedi's spinning in circles during sabre fights. Why have you ever seen a Fencing or Kendo chapian spin around?)
+ After richard is incapacitated, they show him hanging on to life by a thread remenicent of the end of Gladiator. Obviously beaten physically he uses the mental strength from Brianna reminding him of his late wife. The ending fight sequence keeps this in mind and uses it to add to the fight scene.

Bad Things:
- If i hear the word compadre again I will scream!
- Richard getting shot was so unrealistic it made me want to turn the movie off
- Why would car batteries be dead? As far as we know only a year has passed since the infection started.
- No explanation of the monsters who can be killed by both heart and head shots
- No distincton of monsters being either zombies or some kind of mutant creatures
- Many action sequences featuring guns were *BAD*
- You can't shoot monsters up close because the blood splatter will infect you. Bludgeoning them close up with nunchakas is ok though.
- No clear concept of time between the bombs exploding and escaping the city. I.e. it takes about 6 hours to search a parking garage and another 4 to drive 2 blocks.
- "we only have 4 hours, drive fast"... Not sure which city with 0 traffic takes more than 30 minutes to drive through at 90 MPH.. but sure why not.

This balances out. Good beginning. Slow middle. Bad climax. Good ending. You have to like crappy sci-fi movies, if not then you're going to hate this. This would have been 100000000 times better if Richard was never shot, or if he were incapacitated in another way.

but you cant say I AM LEGEND is a remake of THE OMEGA MAN just as you cant say THE OMEGA MAN is a remake of THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, they are all ideas taken from the book I AM LEGEND!

We know it isn't a rip-off of The Omega Man.

It's a cash-in for I Am Legend.

thanks for the "good" stuff. and all the bad stuff you are RIGHT about. sometimes between the writing, directing, budget, etc., things don't turn out as they should. but thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough review.
