Dutch is my mother tongue and, living in Ghent and working in Brussels, I'm quite used to hearing different Flemish dialects. Still, I had a hard time understanding everything because the Strobbe family speaks the dialect of the region around Aalst in Flanders. In my opinion, subtitles could be very useful during some scenes, even for Belgians. Do others feel the same way?

I also live in Ghent and work in Brussels but at some moments during the movie, when there was a lot going on, understanding every person became quite difficult.
The problem would have been easily solved with subtitles as you said before..
I can only imagine what people from the Netherlands, or other provinces of Belgium can understand from this dialect...
I'm Dutch and I wouldn't have been able to understand at least 50% of the dialogue if it weren't for the subtitles.

It's Flemish? I'm from West-Vlaanderen and Aalst is kinda hard to understand, but in this movie I thought it was very understandable. Maybe the dialect in this movie leans more towards West-Vlaanderen instead of Aalst (what they were going for).
shareAs for the subtitles I follow your opinion, but what's more disturbing to me: except from Gilda De Bal and Koen De Graeve (more or less) no one is able to pronounce the Aalsters dialect correctly!! Johan Heldenberg for example is clearly from Gent and the others have strong accents from Ninove, Halle, Erpe-Mere etc.. but certainly not from Aalst! And that is regrettable if you want to make a portet of a family of Aalst...
I speak Dutch, Live in Holland but I had a hard time understanding them. I've never heard that accent before.When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...
