I don't understand why so many love this movie

Why?

Why do you guys not see it as inferior to his first two?

I really don't get it. Seriously.

reply

It's pretty boring for the most part. Plot is all over the place and full of holes. Had some ok moments, I really like Craig as bond. Terrible villain no presence or sense of threat. The finale was embarrassing, James Bond home alone. Spectre was an improvement.

I still haven't watched it from beginning to end! Revenge can be tiring/boring; esp. at this level of intelligence! How many men were lost in that climax trying to kill an old lady?  

Because few Bond films are inferior to Quantum of Solace.

reply

Many people say that but I was never bored during quantum. It ran circles around skyfall, as far as I am concerned.

Well, people don't complain that Quantum of Solace was boring, people complain that the movie wasn't anything more than a ton of action scenes strung together by a thin plot.

I enjoyed Quantum, but it's on the lesser end of the Bond films.

QOS is one of three Bond films that I legitimately hate (the other two being MR and DAF)

Still looking forward to "Spectre!" Haven't seen it yet and it has to be better than this one! Loved "CR" utilizing "Hold 'em" poker instead of Baccarat! I started watching tournaments back in '04 on ESPN & Game channels!

Watch it. It's a pretty good movie, in my opinion.

I too was baffled at the reception of this film as well and I ultimately attributed it to the fact that there was a long delay after Quantum of Solace due to legal issues so Skyfall benefited from the cinematic blue balls that audiences and critics alike seem to get with Bond movies every time there is a Bond reboot resulting in a grossly over hyped and overrated film which I think was in fact the weakest of all the Craig Bond films. Spectre while not great was definitely an improvement.

reply

IMHO it's because "Skyfall" may be a weak film overall, but it has some rather wonderful sceenes - the long monologue about rats on an island, Bond and Moneypenny swanning around the casino while flirting remotely, Bond and M running for their lives and barely being able to speak to each other, Bond's low-tech defense of the family home, etc. If you don't remember the film clearly, it's easy to forget how much lame filler there is between the scenes that work, and overestimate its impact.

"Spectre" is even worse in that respect. After the dazzling opening it just falls to bits, they might as well sell a DVD of the first 15 minutes because there's nothing else worth watching.

reply

Because it’s pretty much nonstop action/suspense. Never really gets slow/boring.

reply

Worst film in the Bond canon by far. Even the scenes which are lovely are edited so quickly you can't enjoy them.

reply

Inferior to his first two? There is no way this is worse than Quantum of Solace. Casino Royale though, is on another level. Casino Royale is easily one of my favorite action movies ever.

But to answer your question, it was just very entertaining and well paced. It had some good acting by Javier, it felt quite different from the other Craig Bond movies.

It was also hyped up due to its release date coincinding with the franchise's 50th anniversary.

I liked the movie until they ripped off Home Alone with that stupid booby trapped house crap. Javier was a good villain, we got a new M, and the new Q & Moneypenny were introduced. 75% of the movie is good. I agree, it is overrated however. I have no idea how people put this in their top 10.

That's one the things I like the most about it. They really were scrambling for any kind of resources they could find to make a final stand. No fancy toys from Q, no backup, no nothing.

reply

lol but that's not what Bond is about! It was insanely silly!! Watch Shane Black's video comment below...

reply

You wanted it to be like the 22 previous Bond movies?
Shane Black made Iron Man 3 and the last ever Predator. Enough said.

Some moments of Skyfall are good but overall it is a frustratingly bad movie. The decision making behind the plot and directing make me roll my eyes. Even though its few good scenes are better than anything in QoS, I rank Skyfall just below QoS. Both suck. QoS is more of a major let-down vs Skyfall being insulting.

Qos: 5/10
Sky: 4/10

I liked the themes of Skyfall a lot. It has to do with the past, aging, the young and the old, and Bond growing comfortable with who he is. These themes are explored reasonably well (though far from perfectly) within the Bond framework.

I found that the action scenes were (with one exception) folded nicely into the plot.

I liked the focus/emphasis on Judy Dench's M and that she got a chance to shine (and shine she did).

I liked the stripped-down climax of the movie, including the retro car and the throwback arrangement of the Bond theme.

Overall, I also found the plot and action to be upper-tier Bond. Not my favourite Bond film, but a decent action/thriller of the spy genre, particularly of the 007 stripe.

I had gripes (Silva's nonsensical plan, the unnecessary assassin leading them to Laos - could've gone straight to Laos) but overall, I thought it was an excellent film and a great entry into the Bond franchise.

I tend to think of it as a top-10er for Bond.

Casino Royale is, I think, the better film by far (top three).

My least favouite Bond of all time is Quantum of Solace. It's inane, poorly shot and edited, never feels like Bond (but for a brief sequence at the opera), and drags despite its short run time.

This was a pretty good movie until the Home Alone Ending. It's not a bad movie, but I don't understand how this ranks as an all time Bond movie by some people. Its good, not great.

reply

I'd say that, for me, it has an interesting theme of "Old vs. New".

You've got Bond aging and needing to pass fitness tests, being upstaged by whippersnapper Q, and that sort of thing. This ties in with the other notion of the haunted past, mistakes and inner demons which were done in youth come back to bite you. Bond is forced to go back to Skyfall and deal with his weaknesses by making them into strengths and M has to deal with Silva, who she turned into a monster.

Bond fighting Silva is also an inverse: Silva is to Bond what Bond is to Q. Ironically, Silva has a mastery of tech which is making Bond obsolete. He knows that going "retro" is the only way forward: he leans into the stripped-down mansion and obsolete tech (basic booby traps - I don't mind the "Home Alone" stuff because it's thematically sensible) to beat Silva's army and hacking capabilities. They even have him pull out the classic car and use a "retro" version of the Bond theme, which is beautiful and thrilled an old-school Bond fan like me.

This is a recognition that an embracing of the past is important, but also moving forward. Being a complete person requires acknowledging all of yourself - even if some of that is stuff you tried to bury.

That's a pretty great theme for any movie, and it's refreshingly deep in Bond where theme is often, "Don't let them blow up the world!"

My complaint about the movie is that it's overlong. Some of the stuff leading up to Silva could be truncated. I'd also say that what Skyfall means to Bond isn't as established as it should be. If they had done that, this would have gone from "top grade Bond/action film" to "movie that just transcended its genre into something bigger".

A final point in Skyfall's favour: it makes brilliant use of Judi Dench as M. She was always excellent and Skyfall gave her a chance to be a driving character instead of the mission-granter.

reply

The fact that Bond is already an aging agent seems stupid to me. He was young and naive in CR and QOS, then all of sudden he goes to washed u agent in his next mission? Makes on no sense. He should have been washed up in Spectre, not Skyfall.
