A great idea for a Rock Band game!!!

I tried sending this to Harmonix but they said "We thank you for your enthusiasm, but Harmonix does not accept unsolicited proposals, materials, submissions or ideas." so I'm just going to write it here.

Instead of making a game based on a specific band (Beatles, Green Day),they should make a game based on a specific person. Make it a whole game based on somebody's career who has done a lot for music and has appeared in a wide variety of musical genres. The perfect example I can think of would be Dave Grohl.

Imagine that, Grohl has appeared in countless bands (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails, Korn, I could keep going...), so you have dozens of songs to work with here. You could create a career mode similar to what was in The Beatles: Rock Band, where we follow Grohl with his many bands in various points of his career. You can also do what Guitar Hero Aerosmith did: in between song sets, you can have clips of Grohl's band, interviews, etc. One topic they should focus on is the suicide of Kurt Cobain (or murder, whatever you people believe), and what Grohl thought about that day. They could also focus on when he stopped Foo Fighters for a while and helped Queens of the Stone Age with their Songs for the Deaf album.

One thing that would be fun in this game would be those dream sequences, like the ones they had in The Beatles: Rock Band for their Abbey Road Studio songs. I was disappointed they were left out of Green Day: Rock Band.

Here are some songs that I would enjoy in the game, if it is ever made.

Nirvana:
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Breed
Lithium
Come As You Are
Stay Away
On a Plain
Dumb
All Apologies
On A Plain
Milk It

Foo Fighters:
The Pretenders
Monkey Wrench
Best of You
No Way Back
DOA
Free Me
End Over End
This is a Call
Floaty
Wattershed
All My Life
Breakout
Wheels

Queens of the Stone Age:
No One Knows
The Sky is Fallin'
First it Giveth
A Song For the Dead
Hangin' Tree
Gonna Leave You
Do it Again
God Is On The Radio
Another Love Song
Song For The Deaf

Them Crooked Vultures:
No One Loves Me And Neither Do I
Mind Eraser, No Chaser
New Fang
Elephants
Scumbag Blues
Bandoliers
Reptiles
Warsaw or the First Breath...
Caligulove
Gunman

Tenacious D:
Rock Your Socks
The Metal

I kind of rambled, but this could be a great game, if made right.

Anyone agree? Disagree? Anyone want to add ideas or songs to this?

Not a bad idea, but what's with the lack of Foo Fighters songs? haha

Excuse me... I believe you have my stapler

reply

I'm not a huge fan of Foo Fighters, so I didn't know that many of their songs. Also, if Learn To Fly and Everlong weren't in other Rock Band games already they would have been on the list. I was also drawing a blank when writing this and couldn't remember any songs by them. I'll fix the list and add some more Foo Fighter songs.

The problem is a lot of those songs are already downloadable. Rock Band games that center on one artist are dedicated to a short list of performers like the Beatles that they feel are too important to just throw in the middle of a regular Rock Band on-disc setlist. Besides the two that already came out and the AC/DC live track pack game, it's kind of only reserved for Led Zeppelin, Queen, U2, the Eagles and Pink Floyd.

"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"

reply

Oh, I don't usually download a lot of stuff in Rock Band, so I wasn't sure what songs would be and wouldn't already be downloadable, so I just added them all. And as for the bands you mentioned at the end:

Led Zeppelin: That would never happen, Plant would never allow it. That would be a great idea, but it would never happen.

U2: They're an ok band, but I wouldn't play a whole game based on them.

The other bands you mentioned are acceptable options for single band games, I guess.

I still think that a biography for a Rock Band game is a great idea, though it doesn't have to be Grohl, I just thought he would be a good person to use, if there ever were a Rock Band game for a person.

Here are some songs that I would enjoy in the game, if it is ever made.

Nirvana:
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Breed
Lithium
Come As You Are
Stay Away
On a Plain
Dumb (maybe)
All Apologies
On A Plain
(twice?)
Milk It (not sure)

Foo Fighters:
The Pretenders
Monkey Wrench
Best of You

No Way Back
DOA
Free Me
End Over End
This is a Call
Floaty
Wattershed
All My Life
Breakout
Wheels

Queens of the Stone Age:
No One Knows
The Sky is Fallin'
First it Giveth
A Song For the Dead
Hangin' Tree
Gonna Leave You
Do it Again
God Is On The Radio
Another Love Song
Song For The Deaf (isn't that track silent, or am I wrong?)

Them Crooked Vultures:
No One Loves Me And Neither Do I
Mind Eraser, No Chaser
New Fang
Elephants
Scumbag Blues
Bandoliers
Reptiles
Warsaw or the First Breath...
Caligulove
Gunman

Tenacious D:
Rock Your Socks
The Metal

Those are the downloadables (or already in a music game including on-disc content or Guitar Hero), that I know of. Good thinking outside of the box, though. Creative.

Thank you, I really tried thinking of a good song setlist. Again, I don't do a lot of downloading, and wasn't sure what was and wasn't already downloadable for RB. The songs that I knew were already in a RB, whether it's on disc or downloadable, I didn't put on the list, otherwise Everlong, Learn to Fly, Go With the Flow, and Dead End Friends would be on that list as well. I also added songs even though I knew that they were already in a GH (Monkey Wrench, No One Knows, The Metal), because GH and RB games always steal songs from each other. GH 4 and RB 2 had like 15 of the same songs, which is a good amount, so I don't care if a song in here was already in a GH.

It's kind of funny that almost every Nirvana song I picked was already used, and On A Plain was on there twice by accident. I need to do more downloading, Nirvana is probably by favorite Grohl band, and in real life their songs are really fun to play on every instrument. I would have looked forward to the Nirvana section of this game that I made up in my head (Right next to Rock Band: Led Zeppelin, the new imaginary game I made up in my head that has a way less chance of happening than RB: Grohl).

I just listened to Song For The Deaf, it's not a silent track, by the way. None of the songs off of that album are, it's just called that. Really, if you think about it, any song would be a song for the deaf, because it wouldn't matter what song they would listen to, all the songs would sound the same for them.

Good point on the GH/RB stealing songs.

Trust me, after you download all that Nirvana, you won't have to wonder what a Grohl game would be like. Several the reviews I read for GHWT and GH5 were like, "Do we really need a Nirvana track in every game?" Personally, I would like a Guitar Hero game to focus less on what's popular but easy (I immediately think of the upcoming GH which features "Uprising" by Muse, easily one of their worst songs from their worst album yet but they're mainstream now so Activision needs people to buy the game based on songs like this).
They should shine a spotlight on more obscure bands rather than every RB/GH setlist being:
----------
a Nirvana song
+ 10 good old '60s/'70s hits (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steely Dan, The Who, Kiss, "Play That Funky Music," "Spirit in the Sky")
+ 10 classic '80s hits (Billy Squire, Duran Duran, Ratt, Billy Idol, Cheap Trick, Rush)
+ 5 songs from bands that peaked in the '80s or early '90s which were popular but are lame or not fun to play (Night Ranger, Bon Jovi, The Police)
+ 7 or 8 songs from the '90s to early '00s that are okay but forgettable or it's old grunge that never gets picked when I'm playing with a group of people so folks generally consider it expendable (Bush, Soundgarden, Face to Face, Garbage, Tool, "Mountain Song")
+ 7 or 8 metal songs from the '80s-'00s which are sort of fun to play but it's like each time they just get pick a random Metallica or Megadeth song
+ 7 or 8 songs from the current alternative scene where they kinda got the band right but the song they picked is easy to play, mediocre and/or mostly chords ("What I've Done," "Never Miss a Beat," "Float On," "Some Might Say," "Re-Education")
+ 5 epic songs you're surprised they're just now using it after their franchise's third or fourth game (Beat It, Hotel California, Purple Haze, Under Pressure)
+ 5 songs you kinda forgot but now remember from '90s and start to like again (Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, 311)
+ 5 random picks or recent hits from bands popular since the mid-'00s like Coldplay and The Killers, just an excuse to put their names on the game for commercial appeal
+ 2 or 3 good songs you wanted to play, but not live/recorded - the studio/album version ("Lust for Life," "Ace of Spades")
+2 or 3 rap-rock or screamo songs where the singer doesn't even need to find pitch, just make any noise
+ 5 emo or nu-metal songs that Hot Topic kids like (Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Bullet for My Valentine)
+ 10 songs that are pretty current, mostly obscure or semi-indie and take people by surprise as actually being good (Band of Horses, Arctic Monkeys)
----------

I hope I'm not in the minority seeing this.

I know that not all of the songs on the album aren't silent. I'm a big fan of theirs (QotSA). I just don't remember "Song for the Deaf," just "Dead" I guess. When I downloaded it years ago, it was four minutes of silence. Maybe it's because it wasn't legal and through iTunes or something, so it was messed up by the uploader. Guess that's what I get.

In my opinion, that list you made more or less resembles all GH and RB games from 2008 to today, especially GH 4, and RB 2. There were some great songs there, but were boring to play. It also felt like they just forced superhard songs into the game for no reason other than to be there (Hot For Teacher in GH 4, Battery in RB2) I did find Painkiller in RB2 great though, I find that one enjoyable, and can get mid-90 percent of notes hit on that song on drums on expert. I mean, I don't see why everybody calls this song so hard, it's a basic beat just really fast and it doesn't change much. Battery, on the other hand, I'm a big fan of Metallica, btw, and don't see how this fit into the rest of the game.

The early GH and the first RB were almost all the songs were fun to play and were great songs, and had nice difficulty curves, the best one being GH3. It didn't feel like songs in the setlist were there for appeal, they were just there to fit in with the other songs in the setlist, and man was it good. They didn't seem to be any forced songs that were there for no reason. The last set of songs were in my opinion, were the greatest choices for the final set, and were fun and insanely hard to play at the same time, if that made sense. To this day, I still cannot beat Raining Blood and One on Expert, but they're still fun with great note charts. (besides Through the Fire and Flames, ugh.) Unlike the newer games, they didn't need to worry about adding in a Blink 182 or Bon Jovi song, a trend appearing in all the recent GH and RB games. Those songs are boring, repetetive, and overall bland and forgetable. To play, that is, but listening to them they're really good songs. There's a difference between a good band and a good Guitar Hero or Rock Band band. Like I said, Bon Jovi has made some great music to listen to, and so has Blink-182, but not so much fun to play (except for the drumming in Blink-182, that's kind of fun). This is the main reason I overall disliked The Beatles: RB. They're one of the greatest band in music history, but many of the songs were easy and repetitive to play, but listening to them they were masterpieces.

I'm not sure if what I just said made any real sense, I just rambled on, but I hope it did.

And I don't know why your "Song For The Dead" was all that silence. I just listened to the song again, The beginning of the song is this guy that says "A song for the deaf," then like 30 seconds of silence but then there's music continuously, until there's about 1:45 left in the song, then there's silence until a minute left in the song, then a weird 30 second little song of Grohl stopping and starting playing the drums, and Homme laughing. That's weird it didn't work for you.

EDIT: And where is there information on GH6, I would like to see how that game is coming along so far. Watch them also make a new keyboard peripheral that won't be compatible with RB3 (that will also have a keyboard, I read about it), so you would have to buy both. Hey, we saw it happen with the drum sets, fine the guitars are compatible but the slider doesn't work in RB. Microphones are compatible with both games but c'mon it's a microphone what differences could there be?

Yeah. Cuz before that, it was just the original Rock Band and 3 GH's. Now, there are five more: that's 2/3 of the RB series and half of the GH series, still majority of those franchises.

t also felt like they just forced superhard songs into the game for no reason other than to be there (Hot For Teacher in GH 4, Battery in RB2) I did find Painkiller in RB2 great though, I find that one enjoyable, and can get mid-90 percent of notes hit on that song on drums on expert. Agreed with all that except being a big fan of Metallica. I'm just a casual fan.

Same here, man. I hate that last set in GH3. I mean, I don't literally hate those songs. They're just a bitch to pass. That we can agree upon. I couldn't pass "One" or "TtFaF" on hard. I felt embarrassed at myself and noob-ish, I had to go and complete 'em on medium. Keep in mind I finished the Rock Band, Band Hero, Lego Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 campaigns on expert guitar, most songs with 98-99%, a few with 100%'s.

Still, we're on the same wavelength. I love the Beatles, and kind of dig Blink-182 but not necessarily for playing guitar or bass. Not a fan of Bon Jovi. I just have "Livin' on a Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive" on my iPod. You make sense.

That's Limewire for ya. [meh]

I think in GH7, they'll probably make a keyboard or try to top them somehow (which they couldn't do if they brainstormed for months). For 6, there don't seem to be many or any major advancements to the game itself. I think the first thing RB seems to have copied from GH is the Party Play ability so you can come in and drop out in the middle of songs. The only thing I can think of that they (Activision or Harmonix) can do to make fake-music-playing more realistic is to gave you a distortion pedal to make your guitar sound different.

Agreed. I felt stupid when I played Bark at the Moon on expert in GH1 and literally, literally, I failed with two or three notes left in the song!!!! I could see the end of the notes right there!!!! but I had run out of star power and failed with like a red note left and then a yellow and then I would have been done with that song, that diffuculty, and that game. I got so pissed!!! Then I tried again and beat it

And then I come across GH5 and I'm already in the second half of songs and getting 96%-99% of the notes hit on Guitar on expert with consistent 5 stars all the way saying to myself "where's the challenge?" And with Gh5, I had never been in a situation where I had to use Star Power to save myself, I just use it whenever. Hell, I doubt I was ever in the yellow zone in any of the songs.

Another thing I disliked about GH4 and GH5 was the random guest stars. I guess it's cool to see Ozzy, Hendrix, and Cobain in action, but they made no sense, and it was really easy to make these guys look like idiots. (Go ahead, play as Cobain and play The Rock Show by Blink-182, and you'll regret it for the rest of your life. I still can't get that image out of my head, Cobain standing there singing a Blink-182 song jumping around like an idiot.)

I get Gameinformer every month, and just got this month's, and they talk briefly about RB3 and GH6, the only thing I'm partially excited for is the keyboard thing, then I went back to read Zelda: Skyward Sword again. I love the Zelda franchise, can't wait to hear more about this game. And Ocarina of Time re-release for DS. Then again, I could still dust off my N64 and play it with the good old oddly-shaped N64 controller.

Wow, I just realized how far we got into this discussion. I started this whole thing off about a Dave Grohl game and here we are talking about how much we hate new GH and RB.

While we're on the topic off getting off topic, what would you say to a Rock Band: Guns n' Roses? Thinking about it, that would be a good idea. Not a lot of their songs have been used, they have a great history, catchy songs, and they have enough songs to make a whole game, as long as they use almost all of them, and they include Chinese Democracy, much to my dismay. C'mon, honestly tell me that you wouldn't get excited to finally play as Slash in a game.

EDIT: Whoops, forgot about Slash's appearance in GH3 LOL . Ok, but it would be cool to finally play as Axl, or Duff, or somebody else.

My friends and I were like that on "Green Grass and High Tides" playing the RB endless setlist in 2008.

I think the only song I failed was "Spirit of Radio." I also have a bit of a problem with "Sultans of Swing" and I think "Scatterbrain."

It's even weirder seeing Ozzy doing "Misery Business" and Santana singing Garbage.

It's weird, Nintendo made my first console (SNES) then I never had any association with them until Christmas 2002 with the Gamecube, which made me dizzy, and I wish I had gotten a PS2. So then I had my Sony phase and I've been a Microsoft boy since '08. My life story in two sentences. So yeah, I never got into Zelda. I had most systems that came out since I was old enough to game except for Dreamcast, Saturn, N64, Wii and PS3.

This is the most action this board has gotten in months and months. It goes weeks without being posted on. We'll probably be the only people to read these till 2011.

That would be alright to me. I'm not a huge fan of the band, but I would rent it. It just sucks that to really have the complete game, you will have to have downloaded Chinese Democracy and transfer "Shackler's Revenge" from RB2 if you have it (which I don't because I really dislike its setlist). I own Green Day: Rock Band (pre-ordered it over a month in advance) and I hate that I had to download the already-available 21st Century Breakdown album tracks. There's a game challenge that to complete it, you must have those songs. I think the game is great, like an 8/10, except for that, and the lack of venues/dreamscapes, and barely any songs released between 1994's Dookie and 2004's American Idiot. There's a big gap in songs about jerking off and smoking weed to wearing eyeliner and singing about frustration caused by the war and death. They also left out important and hit songs 1995-2000 like "J.A.R.," "Redundant," "Waiting," "Blood, Sex and Booze," and "Walking Contradiction." It felt like it was obviously thrown together in a shorter time than they constructed The Beatles: Rock Bamd. I appreciate Green Day more now (even though I've loved them since I was a little kid), so if I heard they put more effort into a GnR:RB than they did GD:RB, I would definitely check it out.

My console buying history follows a coincidental pattern: Nintendo console, some other company, Nintendo console, another company etc. I don't count hendheld systems in this pattern, and I have a NES, then a Sega Genesis, then a N64, then a PS2, then a Wii, and then an 360. Besides that I also have a DS, PSP, and probably all the Game Boy models every released (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP). So while you weren't that interested in the Zelda franchise, I never got that much into the Halo franchise, since I only got my 360 recently. I still love my PS2, and play it a lot, even though it's pretty much last-gen. This is where I met the SSX, Mortal Combat, Crazy Taxi, Gran Turismo, and Kingdom Hearts franchises, the last two franchises, I can't get any more with their new releases for the PS3 (except a PSP Kingdom Hearts release in a couple of months). I don't use my Game Boys anymore, except for the occasional moments where I find them and play my old Pokemon games again, which I grew up with, Pokemon Yellow probably the first game ever put into my toddler hands. The only game I can really reccomend to you from my DS or PSP game library would be Rock Band: Unplugged for PSP. It had many songs already in a RB or GH game, but it plays differently than them, so you don't notice that much.

And the worst part is those songs you have to download are the album's best songs (Know Your Enemy, 21 Guns, East Jesus Nowhere, Last of the American Girls). Also, the only way to download those songs is on the Rock Band store in RB2. However, my copy of RB2 is on my PS2, and GD:RB is on my Wii, so I can't download them. The rest of the 21st Century album was so-so, but I'm a huge fan of the rest of Green Day. I've been a big fan of them since 2004, with the release of American Idiot, then from there I went back and listened to Dookie, Insomniac, and Nimrod, and here I am with almost all of their material on my iPod.

I was also dissapointed that a lot from the mid-to-late 90's songs were missing from Green Day: Rock Band. Including songs you mentioned, here are songs that I would have really liked in this game: "Maria", "J.A.R", "Walking Contradiction", "Stuck With Me", "Westbound Sign" "Redundant", and "Waiting" could have easily been in the game. I'm also dissapointed that nothing from before Dookie was in the game. There were a few songs on the 1,039/Smooth Out Slappy Hours, and the Kerplunk! album the I would have enjoyed in the game.

The only other problem I have with this game, like you said, is the lack of venues. They made up one for the Dookie era, called the Warehouse. Couldn't they have played on a stage from the Lolapalooza tour or somethnig instead of make a place up? Also, if there were more songs from the mid-late 90's, they could have gotten their own seperate venue.

Also, you're right, there should have been some imagination sequences like in Beatles Rock Band (which I disliked: too easy and boring, but a great band in general). It definitly would have worked for GD:RB, especially Jesus of Surburbia and Homecoming from the American Idiot album.

But besides that, it was a really great game, I love it, it's really fun to play, and the bonus features you unlock, the videos and pictures, are amazing, the best single band game since Guitar Hero Metallica. The other single band games were pretty much failures (Aerosmith, AC/DC, Beatles, Van Halen). Guitar Hero Metallica is the best in my opinion. Whether or not you're a fan of Metallica, this game is insanely fun to play, it has songs from all points of their career, From Master of Puppets to Death Magnetic and everything inbetween, and the bonus features are amazing. There's a few videos of the band recoring their motion capture for the game. One of them is hilarious, it has drummer Lars Ulrich trying to mo-cap one of the songs, and continually messes up in the beginning of the song. It's really funny. My only complaint is that it doesn't really have a story mode, and the game makes no refernce to their older guitarist and two bassits, only the band members of today.

I didn't count the handhelds either, and I never really got into Halo. Gears and Call of Duty.

Ahh, personally, my favorites from that album are "Peacemaker," "Viva la Gloria? (Little Girl)," "Before the Lobotomy," and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades." I could live without "Last of the American Girls." On the 360/Live, you can download a seperate store where you can get the downloadable songs for every kind of Rock Band game without putting in a disc (although the RB1 and RB2 DLC, which is bunched together, is pretty much mostly the Lego Rock Band DLC).

Yeah, I also really like "Church On Sunday" and "Scumbag" a lot too. They really skimped out and left a decade of music from a band narrowed down to like seven songs. I understand why the pre-Dookie stuff was left out because the songs weren't digitalized into master tracks for the games, being too old and in bad shape. It would have been forgivable if they had trivia and facts about Green Day's origins on the menu/loading screens. I wouldn't even have thought about it.

But besides that, it was a really great game, I love it, it's really fun to play, and the bonus features you unlock, the videos and pictures, are amazing, the best single band game since Guitar Hero Metallica. Your Metallica was my Beatles. I thought that was the stuff. Maybe it's because the Beatles have a more welcome, nonabrasive, bright and fluorescent-color thing going on. I found it more pleasant as an experience.

Well it's nice they got back to me, but it's too bad they're not planning to release a Grohl RB.
