Films that influenced Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is a game that seems to have its roots in a large variety of sci fi themes. So I think it's appropriate to ask here on imdb: What films have a clear influence on the game world of Fallout 3 or at least share similarities? I can name a few of the obvious ones.

The Road Warrior - The villains clearly inspired the raiders, with the mohawks, S&M-like leather armor and bloodthirsty attitude.

Them! - The quest Those! is obviously based on the movie, and both involve giant ants and a child warning others about them.

Blade Runner - Similarities to the quest The Replicated Man. You play the role of an investigator who is searching for a human-replica android who doesn't even know they're an android. Very similar to the movie.

Any other ideas?

It has been suggested in the Fallout Wiki (I think it was) the Doc Bill Preston and Theodore Strayer were inspired by "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"

Which is supported by Strayer's laid back persona. Also, if you ask Preston if he "has any chems" he will reply with "I'm a doctor not a dealer" in homage to Dr Bones from Star Trek (I'll have to check that though to make sure I am remembering things correctly).

Terminator in some ways. The Road Warrior was the first one that came to mind though

Well some of the robots i've seen look very "lost in space" to me.

There are also a bunch of other similarities to The Road Warrior. The leather armor in the game, for instance, looks a lot like the clothing of Max, the protagonist from the film. The .44 Magnum revolver (fitted with a scope) is the same quite distinct weapon used by the villain in the movie. Finally, the player character's possible dog companion, Dogmeat, is an Australian cattle dog, which may just be a coincidence but I think he has a pretty strong resemblance to Max's pet dog in the movie.

No one mention Mad Max yet? That's the first movie that came into my head. Seems a lot has been taken from its style.

Road Warrior = Mad Max 2. Though essentially people are implying that Fallout 3 was inspired by the whole Mad Max franchise

I do know that the Dunwich building and essentially all Ghouls were inspired by George Romero zombie movies. The relic at the bottom of the Dunwich building was also inspired by a Lovecraft story, but I forget which one.

I think A Boy and his Dog also inspired this game in particular the Glowing One's (Ghouls). I've never seen the whole movie but there's a scene where the protagonist and a bunch of bad guys get chased away by a Screamer (a highly radioactive mutant that glows in the dark).

im racking my brains to think of some references, whilst playing the game i noticed loads that we havent mentioned but as i havent played the game in about a year i can hardly remember :') well in the quest 'THEM' the boy quotes Die Hard "i feel like a tv dinner" or something like that. Planet of the apes is probably the type of film to be referenced in the game but i cant think of any atm.

"a boy and his dog" has greatly influenced Fallout 3. Everything from the vaults, the glowing ones, an apocalyptic 1950s America, and the name dog meat. Also, several songs that are in this movie can be heard in Fallout 3.

Here's a link to the rest of the cultural references found within the game:

Lara Croft Himiko! The First Sun Queen! This is Yamatai.

I feel like Dr. Strangelove is a heavy influence, simply because of the ending with the nuclear explosions and older music playing. It might have been part of the inspiration to make a nuclear apocalypse game with so much '40's/50's culture and music.

I saw tons of influences, some intentional, some maybe not.

The Road Warrior is perhaps the most obvious. The armour of the Raiders, etc

The Protectrons look a bit like the robot in Forbidden Planet.

The unexploded bomb with the religious cult worshipping it in Megaton reminded me of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (the second film)

The underground vault, where no one has seen the sun, and the person's first trip above the surface, reminded me of Logan's Run.

The vaguely Western vibe of Megaton reminded me of Firefly/Serenity

The wastelands with their ghouls and undead people reminded me of Omega Man/ I am Legend

very good, all of'em are some I never thought of and are mos def influences.

Funny you should mention that; one of the add-ons for New Vegas features a trait that is a very direct reference to Logan's Run.
