What's the point? (spoilers)

What did I miss? I keep giving movies about the occult the time of day. I want to figure them out, understand the meaning, and am even going to pursue books on the subject. But I fear that it's simply a bunch of hogwash and that I'm wasting my time...

Which leads me to my question: what was the point of this movie??

Did the protagonist simply have to get in touch with his repressed wild side in order to save his family? Did the movie just showcase the importance of connecting with aspects of the self that we have discounted/ disregarded, in order that we may derive courage/strength from them?

Was there some other metaphorical meaning to the movie that I missed?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

no, i think you're right.

I thought the point was just that black people can also be stereotypical evil hillbillies.

This is actually a good question, and I was wondering the same thing. I'm surprised there is not more commentary on this. The movie either has no point in this regard, or perhaps it is the value of connecting with one's past. But if it is meant to suggest the importance of having a connection to the past, then the only real messages here are either about his abusive father or about backwoods voodoo -- neither of which seems to have any redeeming qualities.
