I think that was to illustrate just how unwilling she was to face up to reality and she was grasping any argument at all to justify her position.

She was just so indoctrinated and conditioned into her religious beliefs, that she just couldn't bring herself to expand or broaden her horizon. Even her dreary husband told her to start living this life and not focus so much on the afterlife.
Bobby loved his family, and Mary was not be willing to accept him as he was into this fold. Her love was phony and conditional. A narcissistic trait. When Bobby gave her the ultimatum that she doesn't have a son if she can't accept him, she couldn't even swallow her pride here. I know that Mary Griffith did come to an understanding and an epiphany about homosexuality; but it was such a drastic way and all at behest of her own hand, that I can still find it hard placed to give her much of an out—if you would pardon the pun.
Mary even admitted that she KNEW Bobby was a different child, even from conception. That was the way he was, it was flaunted right in front of her and yet she remained steadfast. She did have a miserable old hag for a mother though. Yes, wonderful creatures these females can be as mothers. Who said they have a special corner on the market over care and nurturing? Even Bobby's father didn't seem to care so much, he just wanted Bobby to get realistic about his career. His straight jock brother even appeared to be in more pain than anyone else.
