A movie like this with Jeff Daniels

There was a movie similar to this which Jeff Daniels had a very small role. The main guy was a gay Jewish man who was damned near disowned by his mother. The main character had a VERY scratchy voice (like he smoked a carton a day). There was one scene where he was doing a Jewish ritual at his father's grave, and his mother got on his ass. He then screamed at her, "father died in a hospital!! Do you know where [his late boyfriend's name] died?? ON THE STREET! WITH BASEBALL BATS! He was climbing some stairs with Jeff Daniels (who was also gay) who asked him, "you knew [that you were gay] when you were 13?". What movie is this?

It's Torch Song Trilogy. Harvey Fierstein is the Jewish gay man in question, and Anne Bancroft was the mother. I have seen this movie several times, and do not recall Jeff Daniels being in it, nor could I find his name in the IMDB listing. If you are referring to the bi-sexual man he meets at the beginning, that's Brian Kerwin. Matthew Broderick played his lover who was murdered on the street. That appears to be in the West Village, possibly off of Sixth Avenue where there are basketball courts, hangouts for teen thugs, and a known place for late night violence. The area by McDonald's near the courts has had several cases of bashings in the past couple of years.

I didn't know what movie this was, I've never heard of it, but I knew for a fact you were describing Harvey Fierstein from that description haha
