Heavy Miscasting

Kate Beckinsale
Matt Dillon
DAVID SCHWIMMER (bad performance as always)

What was the director thinking? That the project was a romantic comedy?

reply

I think Kate Beckinsale was wonderful. I'm really liking her choices as of late. Esp. Snow Angels.
David Schwimmer had a small part, he did alright, def. not a bad perfomance. Matt Dillon was alright, too, I guess. His part was a bit underwritten, that's why you feel that he didn't give a good performance. His character wasn't textured, thus he didn't have a lot to work with.

reply

David Schwimmer was cast perfectly.
The role was that of a douchebag spineless nasal *beep* and everybody knows hes just natural (sic) in that role. Every character he ever played was exactly according to those specs, maybe because he is incapable of playing anything else.

reply

I thought it was brilliant casting in that role too, but because you don't necessarily know which way he's going to go. I think most viewers look at him and think "Ross from Friends... nice guy... bit of a schlemiel", so it's a bit of a surprise when he turns on (ahem) Rachel.

reply

Exactly. Schwimmer always plays the same personality. Reminded me of his performance in "Band of Brothers"

Beckinsale was good as always. But the film was a bit too long and in the end the sympathy towards her character decreased rapidly.

Dillon had little screen time, so the character never really opened up. Until the end I didn't know if he was a hard-ass, a decent guy, or whatever.

reply

Every time David Schwimmer entered the frame I was jolted out of the movie and just thought "Ross". It was really distracting, good casting (and acting) ensures that this kind of thing doesn't happen. The rest of the cast were great and I enjoyed the story.

Since I am not a "Friends" watcher i didn't have a problem with Schwimmer. I had a problem with Alan Alda due to always thinking "MASH", and I love Alan Alda because of MASH. I am very committed to the idea of the movie but the movie itself left me cold and to me, was forgettable. Too much message, too little depth in characters, maybe. Kate Beckinsdale's evolution over a year in jail, which is a long time, seemed superficial. I would have liked to see more of how she managed in jail. The live interview, where the prisoners cheer, seems abrupt for that reason. Her relationship with husband, if he really was such a schmuck, should have been foreshadowed just a bit IMHO. Maybe it WAS the cast.

I thought Kate Beckinsale, Alan Alda, and Matt Dillion were all absolutely excellent in this. I could have seen either Beckinsale or Alda getting Oscar nods for this, too bad it didn't get much recognition. David Schwimmer was forgettable at worst.

I'm in the same boat. I have never watched an episode of Friends in my life, so it was no problem for me. Never even heard of him before this movie. I thought the guy was fine in that role.

I had a problem with Alan Alda due to always thinking "MASH", and I love Alan Alda because of MASH.

I too was a fan of MASH, but I had no trouble accepting Alda. The fact that he's aged and therefore looks very different from his MASH days helps. But mostly I think it's because his performance was just that good. I bought it.

Kate Beckinsale is maybe just a bit delicate and genteel to be playing a hard-nosed reporter. Nevertheless, I accepted her too.

I thought the acting performances were good all the way around.

Even in "Band of Brothers"? I can't imagine anyone else in that role. He was so perfectly hate-able that I felt sorry for the real man he was playing. But it also felt real as I've known people like that.

reply

Not even in a fictional movie could I picture Schwimmer with Beckinsale. Very miscast. A coat rack would have been more believable and life like.

I thought Kate Beckinsale was great - she seems to grab these roles where she can show different 'shades' of the character...she seems 'too soft' but when 'angry Kate' comes out, watch out...so much better than her 'Pearl Harbor' days where her character was limited to being an attractive woman in a love triangle.

Dillon was the annoying one. I don't think he's ever played a nice character.

reply

They had to plain her down for this role.

I think Kate Beckinsdale did a great job, considering we are much more used to seeing her in action flicks like UnderworldSource:Movie Reviews - Nothing But The Truthhttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2009/09/movie-reviews-for-nothing-but- the-truth

Kate Beckinsale has starred in a grand total of...one romantic comedy, so what the hell are you on about? She has however played a strong female lead character in just about every movie she's done, so it's stereo typical casting if anything.

Not at all. I thought this movie had a perfect casting.

Kate Beckinsale was suberb. I really don't understand why she didn't get a nom at the golden globes. She is really a great actress. You only need to see her eyes to see she is really suffering.

Everyone was fantastic but for me Kate Beckinsale, Vera Farmiga and Alan Alda are clearly stand outs

OP is nuts.

All were great.

Sure, I can't stand Schwimmer either, but he's perfect in this role.
