I think you have to unpack the game. Check the forums for the how-to on that. Although you might not have to, I can't remember whether it has to be done, I'd try it first without unpacking.

Once that is done go to:

C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\descr_strat.txt

Then change the playable and nonplayable sections so that all factions are playable except:
papal_states
aztecs
mongols
timurids
slave

One of the replies posted here says only how to play with the UNLOCKABLE factions, not the UNPLAYABLE factions (i.e.: Papal States, Aztecs, etc). If you want to play as all factions I suggest you download the mod found on this site:

It's worth getting and really fun - trust me.

I brought this game a few days ago.

My Windows Vista computer won't allow me to modify the game files. Perhaps it might even be a lock on the game, as I have the 'Gold Edition' version of Medieval II.

Either way it's really annoying, as I want to play as some of the other factions (Byzantium, Turkey etc) without having to slog my way through the Grand Campaign. So far I'm playing as England and I've defeated Scotland and conquered at least 11 provinces, yet whenever I try to conquer France I get attacked by Spanish, German, Danish and Milanese forces, which pretty much overstreches my own resources and soldiers. The Pope is very annoying as well.

Despite this, Medieval II is possibly the best historical strategy game I've played along with the other games in the 'Total War' series and the 'Age of Empires' games.

soue37-1, I suggest you follow the link below

Download the "program" and install it - not only it allow you to play as ALL factions (even the Rebels), it will give you several regional campaigns, allow you to choose between faction X and Y in the historical battles and a few adjustments to the Grand Campaign (such as allowing you to recruit generals) and to the "custom battle" option.

As I've said in my previous post on this thread, please trust me - you shant regret it.

Thanks for the link Comitatenses!

By the way, is your name based on the Roman Field Army of the Later Empire?

Plain and simple, hack and slash your way through each enemy you run into. Should you desire a lazy path through and don't want to struggle beating every single person. Cheat. Takes away from the fun of the game yes, but if you're not interested in the factions given at the start and only want to rape and pillage as the Danes or fight off the Mongols as the Turks. Then cheat, bring down the console via tilde key and use 'bestbuy' for cheaper stuff, 'auto_win attacker/defender' for auto battles and... well generally its the exact same as the other total war series. It is definitely more fun once all of the teams are unlocked. But i really suggest, don't use the cheats unless you get REALLY frustrated.

thanks for the advice Bcritch4, even though I'm exactly one year too late in respone to my original query.

Has anyone here played Empire Total War then?
