Narrative parallels

I would love to hear some of the thematic parallels you noticed because this film seemed so ambitious it forgot to flesh out the major connections from one dimension to the next. This film was lacking most of all the exposition necessary to take the ethereal planes at work and make them seem round enough to find compelling instead of cliche.
