"Lovecraftian"? A Review... with spoiler content.

This is a crude, cliche filled film with lots of gore, some genuinely unpleasant stuff and a fair amount of bad acting. It's also yet another pointless riff on H.P. Lovecraft, an author whose work is now popular with people who have no clue what it is about and who have never read any of it.

It is claimed that Castle Freak (1995) was in some way based on "The Outsider" by H.P. Lovecraft although the film bears no resemblance to the story. The 2020 version actually references the story in the opening sequence where the "freak" approaches a mirror, but there is still no significant connection. However, the 2020 film IS chock full of HPL material: A Cthulhu statue, The Necronomicon, quotations from the Necronomicon paraphrasing HPL, references to Yog Sothoth... And, ultimately it pays off in a very strange way, as the film turns out to be a recognizable adaptation of "The Dunwich Horror".

One final oddity is a scene in the middle of the end credits, which seems to be setting up an HPL Cinematic Universe. If it happens, it will be cheap, sleazy and brainless, so, if you're into that, watch for sequels.
