Any other good realistic Japanese movies?
I liked this movie a lot, and wondered if anyone could recommend any other good Japanese movies which doesn't feature monsters or samurais (I like Kurosawa but still)

I highly recommend Aruite mo, aruite mo and Wandaafuru Raifu, both by Koreeda Hirokazu.

there are many, many more...
Tokyo Sonata, it taps into the unemployment issue during the worldwide financial crisis and how it affects a japanese family and also suicide an ongoing issue in Japan, one of the best foreign language films i've seen.
Also you can check out Memories of Matsuko a very strange film its similar to old movies like An inspector calls and the Killers. its basically a kid investigating the death of his long lost aunt, with flashbacks of her life as a kid and how it lead to her untimely end, pretty sad movie.
"The stuff that dreams are made of."
Quill, would be a great movie for you to see, it's a realistic film, set in contemporary Japan(2004), and it's probably the first time I've seen a working class family in a Japanese film. What I mean is that the houses shown don't look so great on the outside.
It's about the life of dog raised and trained to become a guide dog for the blind. Thankfully the dog is a realistic one and does not do any talking or stupid cgi crap like in those Marmaduke or Scooby Doo movies.
If you don't mind older stuff, the 1960s dramas by Shôhei Imamura and Kijû Yoshida are all must-see.
