Ikiru
Late Spring
Last Life in the Universe
All About Lily Chou-Chou
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Tokyo Story
Hana & Alice
Love Letter (1995)
Drunken Angel
Spirited Away
Nobody Knows
Cafe Lumiere
Happiness of the Katakuri's
Grave of the Fireflies

I Highly recommend each and every one of these.

I haven't seen a single one of those movies (not even Spirited Away). I've only even heard of 3 of them.

Here are my top 10 Japanese movies in alphabetical order:

Appurushîdo (Appleseed)
Batoru rowaiaru (Battle Royale)
Bekushiru: 2077 Nihon sakoku (Vexille)
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Kôkaku kidôtai (Ghost in the Shell)
Kataude mashin gâru (Machine Girl)
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Shura Yukihime (Princess Blade)
Zatôichi (Blind Swordsman Zatoichi)

These are all worth checking out, especially Battle Royale.

I agree completely with Ikiru and Late Spring. I also have to add After Life to my list.

One fun thing I did a few years back was to watch most of Kurosawa'a output over the course of a couple of months. *Really* instructive - and a lot of fun.

This actually works with most directors. I learned a lot about Fellini, for example, through an online group going through his movies. (Don't think it would work with David Lynch though, LOL.)
