A movie every Indian should see

I am an Indian. And I recommend this movie to all fellow Indians.
1. Its a very good opportunity to break stereotypes that Indians generally have about Pakistanis. Pakistan is also a great nation and has a great diversity, as diversity does not only come from religion.
2. Through out the movie, I was expecting that now will come a bias against India, but there was NONE. There is absolutely no India bashing in the movie and even no Pakistani jingoism. This is something our Bollywood directors should learn from this movie.
3. It will make you realize that Pakistan has a lot to offer to the world other than terrorists, like in Arts and Music.
4. Its important to know that just like India, Pakistan is also facing an identity crisis, though in case of Pakistan its more severe.
5. And more over being a Hindu, I learned a lot about Islam, rather many faces of Islam from this movie.

I do agree that the editing of the movie is not top notch, and except the lead actor, acting was also just acceptable, but none the less, it's one of the most honest movies I have seen lately.

Now, I have to rewatch the movie to see its editing. I didn't feel any glitches in it. I felt it was natural. When I used to watch Indian movies, I always disagreed with the way they edit the scenes. Some of the movies did have great editing but you have to realize they were commercial movies. The editing is cool like what you see in "Taaray Zameen Peh" but Shoaib Mansoor is reality-focused. In fact, our whole TV industry turned out to be reality focused. From its very inception, TV was run by educated and talented Pakistanis who were professionals and/or professors in art colleges and universities. They learnt art as a "pure art" form free from any commercialism. Even our classical dancers like Maharaj Kathak, Naheed Siddiqui etc, learnt and taught the classical school of dance whereas in Bollywood dances got commercialized. All our TV plays of 60-90s had social message. The stories and characters were taken from real life. There was Glamour when the glamour was part of the context. For example Drama Serial Waaris is set in rural Punjab (by the way, you can watch it on youtube.com. Just type in Waaris and/or PTV). So, that is why Indians might feel unsatisfied with editing.

I am not saying that new techniques should not be explored. I believe the techniques should be used based on what will enhance the story not just to look cool.

No India bashing eh? What was that part where Mansoor tells his girlfriend: "We built the Taj Mahal, we ruled India for a thousand years?"

reply

First of all, above statement is really not an act of India bashing. It is a simple statement of the fact. Yes, Muslims built Taj Mahal(as in designed it) and yes Muslims ruled India for thousands years.

Even if we believe there is an element of "India bashing", then compared to the humiliating and degrading insults hurled at Pakistan in majority of your Indian movies, the above comment in a Pakistani movie is a piece of cake.

So being a muslim is a prerogative reserved for Pakistanis only??

"compared to the humiliating and degrading insults hurled at Pakistan in majority of your Indian movies"
1. Most of the these "insults" are in bad taste and disliked by majority of Indian viewers.
2. I am not aware of the extent of India bashing in the Pakistani movies, simply because I havent seen much.

LOL....in pakistani films, villains r shown to be Hindus straight forwaRD.

This is not the case with Indian films. They dont make all villains muslims...

I have seen film, Larki Punjaban??? Crap man!!!!!

I have seen Koi Tujh sa Kahan, Nikki jehi Haan, Chooriyaan, Moosa Khan, Billi.

Lol.

Strange, they bash Indian films, yet they see those films again and again.

@snowwhite
Well said, that was pretty informative.

that is seriously some of the most unintelligent or illogical dialogue I have ever heard. The next thing the girl would say is "Hey I am a christian and I have built Eifel Tower, half of this world, including the rail lines in your country".

Come on dude, why talk of 800 years, dainosours ruled the land for millions of years, why dont you talk of that. The guy seems to talk of Taj Mahal like he was the architect of the bulding, seriously...

This is what is wrong with the thinking, did that girl talk of anything about christianity, did she asked you what faith you follow, its normal for a person from other country not to know about your country,

about how many countries you know of from latin america or eastern europe for that matter. There can be a better way of introducing yourself than "I am a muslim and a muslim made the taj mahal", who cares, Hindus, christians Muslims, Sikhs ....etc. made thousands of building and you can't take credit for that. Its the same thinking in line like you are from india aur pakistan or from a particular religion and u must be involved in something bad.

Anyone want to comment on that is welcome.

And yes, I really liked the movie, it clearly tried to show the truth and tried to deal with it. The music is awesome, I watched it just because of the music.

There is a small element there but nothing much.

However, please tell me which scene in which Indian movie bases pakistan other than the correct reasons?

reply

Mr.invinsible
Therez no indian bashing in the above dialogues or in any other dialogue in the movie. It simply says "we Muslims" not "we Pakis" and it also says that we ruled spain for 800 years. And both of them are facts so i dont think there shud be any problem.
Sadly you dont see the real meaning behind that scene your just pointing out things that have no relevance. We say it in urdu "zabarasti ki Pakh nikalana"

reply

You're right. the movie is awesome, and its good to know that indian audiences have the sensibilities to accept mature cinema.

reply

this movie should be seen by all the fanatics......including those in INDIA like MNS, RSS extreme right wing people.....it has a lesson for all of us.....this kind of theme should be encouraged......

(i am an INDIAN too!)

Duaatul how can you say that there is no India bashing in this movie.
In the very scene where this guy is interrogated in the jail by the American authorities, wherein this pakistani guy is defending the actions of Islamic terrorism by debunking that muslims are ill treated all around the world, and they are being killed everywhere.. he very clearly groups India among chechia, sudan, palestine etc etc.. he says that Indians are killing the Kashmiri's the muslims in kashmir.
Now what kind of hate propaganda do u call this.

reply

I couldn't find that scene, where's it dude?

I loved the movie. The whole Taj Mahal part was kinda unnecessary but overall, good acting by the lead Shaan, Rasheed Naz and Naseeruddin Shah.

Editing glitches were there and I disagree that it's like Taare Zameen Par, I mean c'mon..that's done by professionals with the backing of a production house. Whereas in this case, the movie had a lot of backlash before being released and it's an independent film. I'd compare it to something like, "The Man From Earth".

See, if you notice carefully, the background music is loud at times..it just suddenly springs in. It should be more coherent. Small things like that. But given the circumstances, the effort has been well appreciated. It's a must see. Perhaps, if Shoaib Mansoor makes money in this, he could release a touched up version for the masses and it'll send the right message across.

Hey ppl...
Today i watched the movie for the second time...and here are my comments.
Its an awesome awesome movie....and rly unbelievable that it is from pakistan....i am an indian and this is the only pakistani movie i have seen...the fact is that i dont usually watch movies....because most of them are crap like many bollywood movies or shd i say most of them. But movies like this really livens up ur soul.

The Music is just gr8888....and i think this movie shd compete in oscars....the message is strong and the movies gives you goosebumps every now and then. The background music is the soul of the movie which plays after every such instance in the movie which is crucial.

I hope pakistan produces more of such movies make sense....bravo to the director and excellent work done by all the actors...hats off

At last it deserves 8.5-9.0 rating on IMDB...for sure

reply

Well, there is some India bashing - the elder brother says during torture -" ...indians killing muslims in kashmir.." ...i think it's rather the terrorists killing them. But overall a good movie!
